Another Bay Bridge Shutdown Likely Before Christmas

Bridge Closed Sign.jpg

The temporary repair made to the cracked eyebar on the Bay Bridge, according to KTVU, "remains problematic and will likely require that Caltrans to shut down the entire span again sometime in the near future." And that closure? Could come before the Christmas season.

A KTVU source says that "designers have settled on adding a second eyebar over the cracked one and inserting a longer pin to hold the two together.

Yesterday, if you recall, SFist told you about a UCB engineering professor who strongly, strongly suggests shutting down the bridge right this very second. Our poll on the same subject indicates that most of you agree with him.

It's not surprising that the old part of the bridge is falling apart. that IS why they're replacing it with a new one, and why they have the dreaded temporary s curve that apparently people are blasting through at 70 mph....they could put up giant neon sign saying "Don't speed through here you might die, you fools" and people would STILL blast on through thinking "oh it can't happen to ME..."

Just think how many free BART rides, Muni Rides, and bike lanes could've been built instead of all these fixes...

Considering it lasted as long as it did, and survived (albeit damaged) the 89 quake, overall it did pretty good. If only we hadn't delayed the rebuild because of political interference...

crossing fingers for 24/7 bart service on new years while they close/fix that crappy bridge!

Ahh, the city is so much more pleasant without all the extra cars from across the bay.
