The Board of Supervisors will be casting votes today on whether to override Mayor Newsom's veto of Supervisor David Campos's legislation amending the City's sanctuary law. As you may recall, the legislation approved by the BOS protects illegal hooligan youth who've been arrested for allegedly committing crime in the streets, from being unduly reported to the feds by city employees prior to actual conviction.
For his part, Newsom reportedly plans to ignore the BOS as his office believes the legislation violates a 1996 federal law that prevents local governments from forcing their employees to keep mum on the immigration status of aliens in their custody. City Attorney Dennis Herrera warns that federal courts may not only strike down the new legislation, but toss out the sanctuary law entirely. All we need is some Linda Tripp looking city employee with an axe to grind to report some freshly rounded up teenaged illegals to find out what will happen.
The BOS meets at 2:00 this afternoon. More details as they become available.
UPDATE: The BOS have voted to override Newsom's veto, 8 to 3. Supervisors Chu, Elsbernd, and Alioto-Pier voted against the override

Yeay for the Supervisors -- I say take it one step further -- IDENTIFY and IMPORT youthful offenders from abroad. Cut a deal with the Mexican govenment and smuggle those cute murderous rascals in! I think it is so darling when they deal drugs and beat people down in public.
I take your more sober assessment of the situation today as a realization that no, it does not in fact violate due process for the Federal government to deport illegal immigrants. You were having great difficulty with that the last time.
really? "illegal aliens"? wow.
Yes. An alien--Noun S: (n) foreigner, alien, noncitizen, outlander (a person who comes from a foreign country; someone who does not owe allegiance to your country)--here illegally.
wait! This is shocking. I guess that makes me an illegal alien. I am an alien and outlander according to what everyone has been telling me throughout my life--that I'm "unamerican." I also don't owe allegiance to this country because uhhh, I'm not draftable anymore and because I say so. As long as the South is part of this country, I refuse to give my allegiance to it. California, on the other hand, can have my allegiance any day.
Yeah! I'm sure that there are plenty of Southerners who hope that you remain in Cali as it sinks into the Pacific. On a larger note, I wish we can strike a balance here. Between SF sheltering illegal aliens even after one of them commits a triple homicide and the Sheriff of my county [Maricopa (AZ)] rounding up Mexicans (even those whose ancestors were here when Arizona was part of Mexico), there has to be a happy medium.
i'm well aware of what the term mean, but thank you for clarification. i'm just surprised to see it because it sounds like a term used by lou dobbs.
What's wrong with Lou Dobbs? Or do you just prefer the Mexican middle class to the American middle class?
in my eyes there is no difference between an american worker who is exploited or a mexican worker who is exploited. to me we are all working class and we are all spending money in our communities, sending our kids to schools and paying rent to landlords.
undocumented workers are a huge part of our community and our economy. they are hired by employers (more often than not, knowingly) because they know they can pay them unfair wagers, not compensate them when injured, not provide healthcare, and threaten them with deportation. yet the number of employers being punished is disproportionately low compared to the number of workers being punished. why is that?
this is a messy issue, it needs to be addressed on a much larger scale. it won't be solved by deporting youth and breaking up families. many of these children are brought here as babies and know no other place as home. casually throwing around terms that imply people without papers are the only ones breaking the laws cloud the issue and give the impression that there is no middle ground. this is not as black and white an issue as many people seem to think.
where's the thumbs-up button? I can't seem to find it anywhere... /s
SFGirl -- that isn't entirely true. Most employeers don't higher illegals because they want to pay them less or not give benefits, most hire them not knowing they are not in this country legally. The penalities for hiring an illegal is quite severe and it isn't worth the risk. It is quite easy to forge documentation -- and most employers are not experts in IDing the fakes.
You are buying hook line and sinker the line that the business man is out to push people down -- while sometimes the case, it isn't normal as you seem to purport.
Word. Our immigration laws are so byzantine. If they provided a legal way for Mexican immigrants to come here, they would use those means. But as it stands, we make it easier for people from other continents (i.e. Australia and Europe) to come here than people who are just a couple miles away.
Further, I see no difference between an immigrant, illegal immigrant, and myself, a native citizen. We are all people, and if we are all committed to furthering our communities, then there really is no reason why you should be considered not a part of our community.
The law of the land says otherwise. Laws passed by a democractically elected legislature.
Nothing complicated about it. Took me what - two seconds to find this:
http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis
We maintain consulates in practically every country. It is NOT hard to find out how to emigrate LEGALLY to the U.S. What is at times a challenge is our quota system - yes, we do not let every single person into this country who is interested in emigrating. Why? Because once you are here as a legal resident alien, there are a whole host of government welfare and other programs you get to access.
And since most of the world is unfortunately dirt shit poor, we'd be overwhelmed with the bulk of the world's poor if we let everyone in and we'd quickly see our Treasury drained dry. Its a sad fact, but that's the reality. And its why we generally have more stringent quota numbers for poorer parts of the world than richer parts of the world.
Nice straw man - nothing in my response suggests letting off the hook employers who knowingly recruit or employ illegal aliens. Those businesses should be prosecuted too as well, to the fullest extent.
This is about obeying the laws of our land and nothing more. One does not get to selectively decide which laws to obey and which to disobey. You choose to disobey the law, then don't cry to mommy when you go to jail.
I wouldn't be so ready to break out your Minuteman-brand truncheon when you yourself support the very companies who demand the presence of undocumenteds (and lobby against enforcements) every day that you, you know...eat food.
Deport them all. Get in line like every other immigrant that came here LEGALLY.
Entry into this country, like every other country on the planet, is a privilege not a right.
Someone really needs to come up with a name for the triumverate of Alioto-Pier, Chu and Elsbernd - something that captures the essence of those three being mayoral lackeys who all owe their seats to having been appointed by Hizzoner - as opposed to having had to, you know, beat an incumbent. At least Elsbernd sometimes fakes having his own mind - the other two, I'm not sure they aren't just sockpuppets.
@chinaknob(sic)How about "the only rational three on the BOS".
no comprendo, ¡en español por favor!
E-VERIFY OVERTIME CAN REDUCE THE 20-30 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN THE WORKPLACE BY "ATTRITION." WE DON'T NEED DEPORTATION ON A MASSIVE SCALE AS THEY WILL LEAVE ON THERE OWN. POLITICIANS CAN ADD AMENDMENTS TO THE 1986 IMMIGRATION BILL, INSTEAD OF THE TRAVESTY OF FORCING A NEW ONE ON THE FINANCIALLY HURTING AMERICAN PEOPLE?
Bloggers nationwide brought to the public attention the need to stop the infiltration of illegal immigrants in the workplace. Now the voice of --THE PEOPLE--are demanding sealing the borders tight and that every corrupt politician catering to corporate welfare--MUST GO, Starting with Sen.Harry Reid (D-NV) Special attention should be drawn to incorrigible governors, lawmakers, mayors judges and elected officials who have ordained policies of SANCTUARY STATES.
Hopefully E-Verify will become a nationwide vetting system to remove illegal workers from your office or from your factory? It has shown its efficiency, because the open border organizations have moved heaven and earth to smash it? Now it is firmly entrenched in every American workers mind, that it can save their jobs. Even Sen.Harry Reid, who tried to table E-Verify failed miserably and now, is funded for another 3 years. This gives reputable politicians time to make E-Verification mandatory as it’s been evaluated as a good immigration enforcement instrument and it could be introduced for other purposes. As a national legal people's identifier and combined with other data bases, it usages could be essential to recognize fraudulent drivers license, auto registration. Child support, health care and many other verifications of individual who think they are safe from government. But its main restrictions will to terminate foreign nationals appropriating US workers jobs.
In the future this data base could be established at airport terminals for departures and arrivals. It will be an ongoing fight against the opponents such as US chamber of Commerce, ACLU, Council of Foreign Relations, business organizations, agriculture and other groups. It is certain to be a bargaining chip in shoving through another Comprehensive Immigration Reform package, that will devastate America. An overflow of poor, uneducated humanity, looking for free health care will start pouring into our nation. Around the world rumors are already flying that if you slip across the sieve of a border, you can get work as low income and get all your taxes back by lying on the tax form. Tax credits for non-existent supported children is an industry, that costs the US taxpayer billions a year. If Napolitano thinks that --ALL--Democrats will accept another trillion dollar budget deficit, cause by a new BLANKET AMNESTY.
That bridge is still available in Brooklyn..? Very few Republicans will accept another AMNESTY? Not too much chance from Independents. Nor will legal immigrants or ethnic Americans who were born here, fought in four wars. Even people from South of the border are very reticent of allowing more people in, when there is 15 million unemployed. It means millions of low skilled workers would feel the crunch first, as already illegal immigrants who take their wages under the table, especially in Sanctuary States and undermine US labor?
I know quite a few Democrats who signed onto the Obama Presidency that will fight against any travesty called Comprehensive Immigration Reform? The one in 1986 was a complete disaster and unable to handle the sudden in surge of millions of more destitute people, thinking they were going to collect welfare? Our country is overrun with every conceivable crime, that includes murder, child and female violation, document fraud, welfare fraud, house invasion, burglary, robbery, spousal abuse, gangs and other heinous activities The doors to America are wide open, but nobody in their right mind is going to accept the first surge of 2-3 million coming from the South when they hear Lady Napolitano proclaiming a new AMNESTY? Those who believe in America’s survival, without OVERPOPULATION as stated by the US Census bureau better read facts, not the lies at NUMBERSUSA. Those who want details of corruption in WASHINGTON and state government go to JUDICIAL WATCH. Overpopulation, traffic hell should go to CAPSWEB. Other sites of interest on Immigration enforcement is ALIPAC and AMERICAN PATROL. We the people have the ultimate power to throw out anti-sovereignty incumbent politicians. Call and command these do-nothings to--STOP--this facade at 202-224-3121.
