Support of Gay Marriage Closely Linked With Age

gay_marriage_graph.jpg

Unless you're a godless whore who uses contempt for a group of people to make a cheap buck, most young people are in support of gay marriage. Which means, after most of the bigots finally -- finally! -- die off, marriage equality stands a chance.

Yay, the future!

According to Andrew Sullivan, "[a] clear majority of the under-30s favor marriage equality in all but 12 states."

While "it doesn't make those constitutional amendments any easier to reverse," Sullivan adds, "it does add some perspective and may help us keep our cool."

LOL @ "Godless Whore." and it's not over. First the topless pics leaked, then the rubbing one out video. Next up: Carrie caught in hot girl on girl action. She is predictable as fuck.

Unless you're a godless whore who uses amateur masturbation videos to make a cheap buck

fixed!

/not that there's anything wrong with that

not true for everyone, but some people do change when they have kids. this might explain the sharp decline of supporters for people over 30. when they have kids they fear the gays will come eat their babies.

Or it could be that by the time a person passes age 30 they would like to see less government in their personal lives.

If you asked me if gay marriage should be legalized when I was 25, I'd of said hell yeah. Now in my later 30's I'd say hell no. And it's not because I'm a against gay partnerships it's that I'm against government involved in marriage. Any marriage.

I'd much rather see licenses, certificates, whatever you want to call it, issued to anyone who wants to become partners.

If the word marriage is that important to you, hit the church for your religious ceremony after the courthouse.

this idea of abolishing marriage altogether certainly isn't a mature over-30s revelation. i proposed exactly that when i was part of a "Youth in Government" program back in high school in the early 2000s.

I think it's a fine idea, but it's pretty clear that lots of people - straight and gay - feel pretty strongly that their idea of marriage should be recognized by the state.

I hear what you're saying but removing government from "marriages" is going more of a radical shift in ideology that's gonna take longer than a few new generations of voters. In the meantime, you can at least support equal access under the current structure.

@pork: my thoughts exactly. i would also add that just because I think state-recognized marriage is kind of silly and even fucked up (and i do), it's important to remember that it's OK if i disagree with certain things the government does, because i'm sharing this country with 350million+ others =P.

EDIT for readability:

I'm happy that this will become a reality during my lifetime but that's not soon enough. I want it to come true sooner...like, during the DC sniper's lifetime.

Let's not forget how long bigots can survive. Some specimens can last up to 100 years.

the dinosaurs, they will finally die.

Is there a graph in existance where Mississippi or Alabama DON'T appear completely in the bottom of the rankings??

Explicit Opposition to Same Sex Marriage. #1 AND #2!

I'd rather see a chart of IQ vs. support of same-sex marriage.

On the one hand you have the college educated types, and on the other you have the "huh huh fags" rednecks. Should be a fairly clean graph, I would think.

It's more of a matter of conservative thinking, isn't it? I've got this uncle who's got two phDs, but he's about the biggest homophobe I've ever met. (Then again, both those degrees were earned in the Midwest.) As a first-gen from an immigrant family, I understand why all my relatives who are over 30 are so close-minded, but it's still upsetting. The "nicest" thing I've ever heard any of them say about gay people is, "Oh it's so sad that they were born that way."

Higher levels of attained education correlate directly with stronger support for LGBT rights. That's been an observation supported by polling for decades, now. It's probably also partly why conservatives want vouchers for religious private education, so they can get some learning while keeping on their strict regimen of bigotry without the polluting carbohydrates of open-mindedness and free love.

Yeah, the bigots age and die. So do we. What do my elder gay friends have to look forward to?

Just one more reason to hate old people.

In the work I've been doing with USF on this, education is probably the single best correlator in the big picture, outside of direct religiosity. Geography is really important, too, but that's self-selecting. For instance, even relatively religious, conservative people in San Francisco kinda sorta support gay marriage, but then, most wouldn't live here if they had a real problem with it.

There's also big debate over whether people become more or less tolerant towards other people if they live near them. Evidence points to more for now. Some of the young people will lose support as they get older, but that rate is declining by a lot. I'm actually surprised the 30-44 value is as low as it is.

i wish idiots WERE a dying breed :(
