Someone on the contribute page chided us about not covering this story, so here you go, folks: Redwood City's Electronic Arts, creator of such awesomeness as SimCity, The Sims, and Rock Band -- cut 1,500 jobs today, more than 16% of its workforce. The economy, and you might have guessed, is to blame. Chin up, (former) EA ilk.

MANAGER 1
Our shitty decisions lead to low profits this quarter.

MANAGER 2
Yes, we really approved some terrible games that nobody bought. What should we do?

MANAGER 1

I know, let's fire some low-ranking employees!

MANAGER 2
Yes that's an excellent idea! Those suckers will pay for our mistakes!

Don't forget Mail Order Monsters. Granted, that was back in 1985, but still, the game kicked ass.

Seriously. Why do people always mention Archon? Mail Order Monsters was WAAAAAAY better than Archon.

Wait, what's going on? Sorry i'm out of the loop as Uncharted 2 has been taking up all of my time. Oh hey, my copy of MW 2 just arrived.

Ah, SimAnt...

/Long live Maxis!

It's not the economy.

Every year, EA starts a bunch of new projects. Also, every year, EA shuts down a bunch of projects.

In theory, they might be able to improve their selection, and not start up crappy projects they'll have to shut down. In practice, shareholders love to hear about layoffs-- and the only way to keep having layoffs is to keep hiring and acquiring.

BTW, they just bought Playfish, so they'll have someone to can in a few years.

Props for using old school EA logo.

Sad times, EA.

You would have to be a retard or a young child to ever work for Electronic Arts - EVER!

Go buy a few more dozen start-up gaming companies based on their image, fire the creative programmers and cash in.

Trip Hawkins is a dickhead on the grandest of scales.

When he is done pillaging all of the talent at Playfish he'll move on to suck the blood from another barely breathing, rotting corpse.

AFAIK, Trip Hawkins left EA to form Digital Chocolate a while ago.

Oh come on. EA didn't create Sim City or the Sims, they bought the company that did.
