Under the impression that online internet world wide webloggers are swiping their golden nuggets of wisdom without linkage, SFGate recently infused their site with inane cross-scripting nonsense that automatically adds a url link when you copy/paste any of the Gate's content. Basically, it's like a teddy bear cam for writers who use their site. It is, for lack of a better word, retarded.
SF Appeal, thankfully, found out a way to shut off the pesky copy/paste scripting. Go here to read more about it. Or, if you're a blogger, go here to turn off the attribution link.
In related news, Chron started printing on glossy paper on Monday in order "to better serve readers and advertisers." Which is very odd. A high gloss fetish combined with paranoid copy/paste scripting can mean only one thing: massive amounts of Colombian disco flake over at 901 Mission. We really see no other explanation.

Nah; some sales rep at the printer, or the paper supplier, convinced a buyer at the Chron that the gloss would be just the zing they needed to bring people back to buying the paper. Suckers.
just paste it in notepad first. This is as smart as those sites that don't allow you to save images....mmm, ever heard of the "Print Screen" key.
I've been pasting SFGate text into notepad first when I steal it for a blog, and it still throws in the extra crap.
I've always been amazed they figured out how to do that, and now I am none too surprised to see they had to contract the task out.
But still, why would you discourage people from linking to you??????
NoScript FTW
I know from experience that getting copy-paste stuff to work in Javascript is really tricky, so I'm a little bit impressed. I'd prefer if they didn't use their powers for evil though.
The feature was outsourced to Type Insight:
http://www.tynt.com/
You can see the Type Insight code with a little digging through the HTML.
Seriously? It's their site and their content, if you don't like it, cut-and-paste from somewhere else.
Maybe they do it because bloggers copy-paste poorly? Like, say, the distorted gay marriage support/age graph? If I made that graph, I'd be pretty unhappy that some blogger made it look all crap. (note that the bad copy-paster in question isn't sfist, but Sullivan).
i like that you reply to yourself.
It's just sort of annoying. Fortunately, there's no law saying you can't disable Javascript on SFGate.com
How dare they try and protect their content.
i often share articles via IM with coworkers and friends alike. it is nice to copy a segment of text of particular interest and paste it along with a link to the full article with fewer clicks and keystrokes. i like this feature, regardless their intent.
Hm. I don't mind it, really. Like people have said, you can always just delete the "Read more" link if you really want to. Though I do wish they'd incorporate some sort of url shortening service, so the urls aren't all MNUJ1AIA3G.DTL#ixzz0WZleaCUy
I'm on the 3rd floor of 901 Mission right now, and I can tell you, no Colombian marching powder to be found.
And the new glossy paper is no substitute for an Electric Light Orchestra album cover.
better yet, they could e-mail out blog-ready versions of each story. then a few ultra cheap community college students could post 'em. or, just open the templates up directly to the chronicle and have them pour in the goods. total consolidation. even dead singleton would blush.
who's dead singleton?
silly brock. you know who i'm talking about.
