An unidentified male Muni ticket agent was arrested yesterday afternoon after allegedly punching a young woman.
"[T]he incident started as a verbal altercation but developed into a fight in which the ticket agent allegedly punched one of the two sisters, a juvenile," reports CBS 5/BCN. "It appears at least one of the sisters then threw a soda can at the ticket agent."
SFPD Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said that "[t]he preliminary investigation indicates the ticket agent was the aggressor." It all started, Tomioka explained, when the agent questioned the age of one of the sisters. "The ticket agent had concerns about the ages and the reduced rate ticket and did ask that question, 'How old are you?' The juvenile didn't have identification to verify her age," so the agent wouldn't let her through, which is when things started to heat up between the two.
ABC 7 reports that eyewitnesses say the two sisters enter the agent's booth and start striking him. Then, "according to a witness who didn't want to be identified, the Muni station agent just lost it and started fighting as if he were up against two grown men."
Both the juvenile and the Muni employee were taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

How does asking for identification make the agent the aggressor?

While I don't condone this, I do understand. There have been some teenage girls on MUNI that I wanted to punch in the face myself and they weren't even throwing Cokes at me. What I don't understand is how anyone could be patient enough to be a Fare Cop in the first place.
I totally condone this. Teenagers suck. The agent should've locked those kids in his both and called that psycho from Money Train.

Nobody with a lick of sense would let two people, not-quite-18 or whatever, strike him or her without fighting back. If somebody starts striking you, are you going to step back and say ... "well, she might be 17 so I better not hit back" Puhleeze ... if you fear for your safety (and if you have any damn sense of self-worth), you're going to hit back. No question. If they went into his booth and started striking him first, he is totally right to put the smack down on her, regardless of how close she is to the age of majority.
Kids should not get a free ride to terrorize people ... if parents won't teach them respect and courtesy, this is the society's next option.
If you read the ABC 7 story, it mentions the two teenagers entered the station agent's booth and a witness said at least one of the teenagers started striking the agent. Muni and their lawyers could argue self-defense, depending on the security cam footage (if it works).
I also don't condone violence, but if someone started hitting me, I'd fight back.

let this be a lesson, if you're in a bar or grocery store, no id = you're assumed to be younger. with muni, if you don't have id you're assumed to be older. everybody wins!
It's pretty simple: if you are attempting to get something that is restricted by age (be it lower muni fare or alcohol), you have to be able to prove your age.
Rule # 1. If you are under 18, you STFU and listen to whatever the adult is telling you.
Rule # 2. If the parents (usually ignorant egg and sperm donors) had the moral fiber to teach their children Rule # 1 then this would not happen.
Rule # 3. Go read Rule # 1, fool.
Teenagers don't listen to their parents, period. It doesn't matter what kind of parents they are.

Oh ha ha. I will have you know I bought my damn adult fast pass today and will continue to do so from now on.
To be honest though, as much as I liked having the cheaper fare, I was appalled that in the 2 years I have lived in this city and youth passing it up, not once was I asked during my daytime bus rides why I was not in school. And also why there were no questions when I boarded in the Castro at 2am completely drunk.
It's called city living. No one cares about you.
i dont get why he was arrested, clear case of self defense. if anything the girls should be busted under that "illegal to assault muni employees" law that's posted around on those signs. i mean what was he supposed to do, just stand there smiling and let the girls attack him until the cops show up?

i'm pretty sure i've walked through the turn style at the embaradero muni station behind this human garbage in question. she didn't have her id proving she was under 18 then either. the older sister/mom made a scene at her for 'forgetting' her id. the agent didn't want to argue and didn't want to hold up traffic. he rolled his eyes at them and let her through.
