Pi Bar Keeps It Real In the Mission

pi-frontlogo-a.jpg

Over in the elite section of San Franciso's Historic Mission District, Pi Bar opened its doors last month. And it's garnering rave reviews. Well, SFGate's Janny Hu liked it, anyway.

The vibe? " More brew pub than pizzeria," while jumping on the dark wood bandwagon. The scene? "Very local. Plenty of Mission hipster types." (Wait, what does "hipster" even mean these days? Aside from a kneejerk response from those outside the 18-to-25-year-old age bracket and folks who intentionally dress down, that is.) Pizzas? "Pies start at $14 for a 15-inch small, plus $2.50 for house-made meats and $1.50 for veggies."

Cheap! Ish.

And the best part of Pi Bar? "The aptly re-named pi*r*squared deal gets you a cheese slice and a pint of beer for, you guessed it, $6.28. It's available during the 3-6 p.m. happy hour," reports Hu.

Pi Bar is at 1432 Valencia St. (at 25th Street). Open 3 p.m. to midnight daily.

$14.00 for a small cheese pizza is "cheap-ish"?

I'm sorry, but the math geek in me must insist that pi*r*squared is NOT an appropriate name for a deal that costs $6.28. 2*pi would be.

$9.87 would be the price of pi*r*squared, assuming r is equal to one. Which is fine, since the unit circle is one of the basic concepts of trigonometry. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_circle for more info.)

2 * Pi * "R"egular Special
Single Slice and Beer of the Day $6.28

Gialina charges $12.50 for a margherita pizza.
Pizzeria Delfina charges $11.50 for the same.
Beretta will set you back $11.

And yet you call Pi Bar's $14 starter price "cheapish"? Living in this pricey city has given you a touch of the ol' Stockholm Syndrome, methinks.

15 inches is a pretty large "small," however.

Please don't expose my poor computational skills in public.

when i worked in pizza, a small was 14" and this is standard sizing with regard to my locals since then. i might have come across a 13" or two over the years, but 15" is by no means "pretty large" for a small.

Referring you to pi*r^2 above - remeber that the extra inch in radius really gives you a kick!

14% more surface area of pizza goodness!

this place is awesome! the happy hour deal is great - although limited to a slice of cheese and beer of the day. however, additional toppings on the slice are only $0.25. also a regular beer is $5. delicious pizza!

hey, but didn't suriya die because of a rent raise? this part of valencia is weird, what with cafe arguello (and whatever that frog thing was before it) in that 26th/Valencia spot being all high-teens with their prices when they're across the street from a salvation army. i wonder if both spots have the same landlord forcing them to cover their leases with crazy prices.

Crap. Why did SFGate and SFist have to post about it the day I'm supposed to go?

I wanted bar seats, fuckers.

We now have the new definition of what a Hipster is. Someone who spends $14 on a small pizza and calls it "cheap-ish". Hey Brock, Go back to the Marina!

that's it! hipsters are from... the marina! thank you, kind sir.

What in the world are house-made meats?

Actually, nevermind. I'm afraid of the answer.

guess what, it's just OK, last time I went I was very disappointed with the pizza, even took some home to let it ferment some in the fridge. Usually that improves so-so pizza greatly, this time it didn't. I'm glad there are hot spots serving mediocre fare like St Francis and Pi Bar, it means I can go to better places and not have to wait. To those heshers of Arinell I salute you!
