Check out this shot of the Metreon, crammed right into the heart of bustling San Francisco at Fourth and Mission, this past Friday night. Where is everybody? Even the movie theater appears empty. It's like they turned the complex into a museum.
That Target can't come soon enough.
The top floor of the Metreon was a different type of museum on Saturday night... If you consider gogo boy dancers, lasers, DJ Manny Lehman, and gay boys dancing museum exhibits =P
Um.. Slow news day, SFist? The Friday before Halloween, no functional bridge, half the stores in there are closed and you're wondering where the crowds are?
How greedy can Westfield get? They put a second movie multiplex inside of a second suburban-style mall within a half block of an existing one, (both within two blocks of the already existing commercial center) and now we're supposed to wring our hands in despair and figure out how to save the Metreon? Screw the Metreon.
Why should we invite Satan into our midst in the form of Target, which will almost certainly put the Cole hardware that's right there out of business? Why not find out why those storefronts aren't renting? Prices too high for the economy perhaps?
"Um.. Slow news day, SFist?"
Good one.
I don't think the cole hardware has anything to fear - mostly, because why would you walk into such a huge Target store (full of god knows who, and with employees that wouldn't be as, uh, knowledgeable). Small is sometimes a good thing against such large store.
I agree with your other point though- i don't understand why the metreon's failure is being portrayed as crisis that should matter to us San Franciscans? Are we profit-sharing?
Something else will move in, or some other smarter group of business people will figure out how to correctly use those thousands of retail sq ft, and make a profit.
As long Jillians' stays to keep that crowd exactly where it belong.
Tell me what suburb builds a 7 story mall with NO additional parking whatsoever literally on top of existing light and heavy rail train stations?
You think target is Satan? I think over entitled Hipsters with no ability to think for themselves are Satan.
Surely big building = bad, big building with target = superbad - small building with ridiculous prices selling products with Ace hardware labels to a captive audience = fauxletariat self actualization.
Maybe I have a chip on my shoulder because my parents stopped paying my rent like 12 years ago.
maybe the Metreon wants in on the mid market phenomenenon
Precisely! If we deck it out with big flashing LED/neon signs, it will be saved!
Maybe a big, awesome space like this would succeed if so many San Franciscans weren't so hell bent on being unique and in-the-know. I mean if its this large it must be suburban and we are all too good, special and important to do anything suburban (read: common). Nobody is that special or important. Everyone is pretty typical.
Big stores aren't a curse, they are awesome. They are where I can get cheap chinese crap for cheap. I'll still use the small guy for specific items that can't be bought for cheap. But it burns me to pay triple just so we can pretend we are special.
Yes, that's clearly the problem with the Metreon: No one ever gave it a chance.
Just level the place and put in a park where public drinking is allowed/encouraged. Nobody lives around there so the Dolores Park NIMBYs won't be able to complain, and everyone is a WINNAR.
