While transferring oil from a barge to an oil tanker a little after 6:30 a.m. this morning, oil spilled into the San Francisco Bay this morning, leaving a big sheen. (Ugh.)
According to SFGate, "There is a one-mile sheen on the bay coming from the tanker the Dubai Star and the barge, which are anchored about 2 1/2 miles south of the Bay Bridge, Coast Guard Petty Officer Erik Swanson said.
"We're not sure exactly what happened," Swanson told SFGate. "It's hard to determine how much oil is in the water because a little oil can spread over a large area of water, but this is bunker fuel, which is a little heavier."
The oil (bunker fuel) is the same kind of oil that spilled into the Bay during the infamous Cosco Busan spill of 2007, where somewhere around 50,000 gallons of fuel polluted the Bay, coastal areas, and wildlife.

TCGB (Typical Coast Guard Behavior):
Your United States Coast Guard. It's like FEMA 2.0. Thanks, Bush!
Wow, and I thought _I_ had issues with the USCG.
The inspector actually believed that the spill wasn't all that serious at first. The Chinese crew (complete with Communist Party information officer) didn't see fit to cooperate with authorities - that didn't help neither.
The spill was estimated at 53K gallons, but the USCG quickly computed a more accurate value of 58K gallons and then sat on this info so as to not look like they were lying or something.
The USCG has its limitations but it's not clear if they've done anything wrong with the Dubai Star.
The news conference is at noon.
They've got 4 Coast Guard vessels out there (including the Pike and the Hawksbill) along with the 150 foot long Ocean Liberty cleanup ship and a tug.
Doesn't look all that serious...
