Putting aside the fact that the ladies, if you will, involved in the infamous Muni bus fight lacked moral character, tact or basic human decency, community leaders hosted a panel discussion and media roundtable today "to reduce tensions between the city's Asian and African American communities." The discussion was sparked over the videotaped Muni fight that captured the internet's attention a few weeks ago.
According to Kevin Weston, director of new media for New American Media, tensions between black and Asian communities in San Francisco are on the rise. In part, according to CBS 5/BCN, because of "an an influx of Asian immigrants into traditionally African American neighborhoods in Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley, and of African Americans into Chinatown." The bus brawl, it seems, was partially due to this tension. That, and a whole mess of bad manners.
The goal of today's roundtable discussion was to develop a "plan for reconciliation and healing" between the two communities.

there has been an influx of african americans to chinatown??
this claim makes me doubt the article's credibility.
African-americans are moving into Chinatown?
What?
they have to say that. otherwise someone will accuse them of racism.
whatever.
here's a hint, people. Don't act like assholes on the bus. It's just a fucking bus ride. there's no need for this kinda petty ass fighting shit like in this FUCKING VIDEO we have to all lose our shit over because, of course, before this month, there were never any problems on Muni ever ever ever.
no need to project on to it armageddon and so on. just be quiet and act like adults. As in "responsible people" not "overgrown children".
oh ok
an influx of... African Americans into Chinatown
What? Where? Are they hiding? That is some highly amusing bullshit.
Some of you obviously don't get out to certain parts of SF too much.
When the North Beach housing projects were closed for reconstruction, many of the families living there were temporarily moved to other housing projects around the City. Some of the families chose to move to any open units in the Ping Yuen (Chinatown) housing projects. Many African-American families moved into the Chinatown projects. When the NB projects reopened, the families that moved out had first dibs on the new units, but for whatever reason, some stayed.
The NB projects were very mixed between various groups of Asians and African-Americans, but the Chinatown projects were predominantly Chinese along with other groups of Asians.
The SFAppeal said the fight happened aboard a Chinatown bus. The 30 and 9X run through Chinatown and North Beach, passing both projects, so don't act suprised that the 30 had people of different races comingle.
Actually, I'm staring at the back wall of Ping Yuen right now. Northbeachinatown is my neighborhood, and I'm well aware of its demographics. The reporter's claim was baseless.
Round-eyes are allowed to live in Chinatown?
We have to apply for permits and pledge never to eat at House of Nanking, but yes.
I have wanted to (but refrained from) punching someone in the face on Muni before and it had nothing to do with their race, it had to do with them being an asshole.
Hear hear!
I was walking down 4th street the other day, and I guess MUNI was ticketing people on a bus who did not have proof of fare. An African-American MUNI fare inspector was writing this old Chinese woman a ticket, and when the old woman tried to say something, the fare inspector said "lady I don't speak Chinese!" The only thing was... the old lady was speaking English, albeit with an accent, but English nonetheless. Racism or ignorance? I don't really know.
Could very well be ignorance. There was a white teenage boy in my store the other day, and I thought he was speaking another language for a good 3 minutes before I realized it was English. Some people (myself included) have a hard time understanding accents. I can understand thick Chinese accents better than British ones. Who knows.
I am also not surprised in the least that there are racial tensions between african-americans and asian americans. The 2 cultures are extremely different. Also, folks in Asia are undoubtedly the most ignorantly racist people i've ever met. I've heard chinese teachers openly discuss in class how they are afraid of black people, and i've had friends in Hong Kong bluntly talk about how south asian people smell bad and are criminals. These things are just ingrained in the culture. When the cultures mix, it will take a while before everything is hunky dory. White americans have a 40-50 year head start, and we are still working on being civil.
more flippantly,
They should just sit down together and have some fried chicken and watch kung fu flicks. Those are 2 things both sides not-just-stereotypically could agree on.
I think that the basis of race relations between blacks and chinese is that each group thinks that the other is extremely rude and arrogant. Who knows, maybe they are all right.
This could be a win-win situation for both groups; the Chinese could teach blacks skills in reading, writing, math and the value of family unity, and the blacks could teach the Chinese how to drive a vehicle.
being an asshole is a universal language which is built into the DNA of all humans. And speaking for everyone and anyone who has ever taken MUNI for an extended period of time, the asshole genes seem to bubble to the surface when on any MUNI vehicle.
Sure, but WHY? You get the same people on Bart and they don't act like shitheads. WTF is going on with Muni?
BART trains (generally) move from point A to point B in a timely manner. Their arrivals and departures can be anticipated by a "schedule".
Muni lacks these features.
