If you're heading down to Santa Cruz this weekend to buy and take illicit drugs -- a common practice in a city that seems to have crashed into the side of California -- remember on thing: you won't be able to smoke outdoors starting today. IN certain areas, at least. Santa Cruz's outdoor smoking ban went into effect today. According to KTVU, "[a] new ordinance, approved by the City Council on Sept. 22, prohibits smoking on Pacific Avenue, Beach Street between the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf and Third Street, and West Cliff Drive." Over the last ten years, Pacific Avenue -- once a bastion of unwashed, methed out looking for a tuppence or two -- has turned into more of a boutique street.
Smoke-free hotels in the city will also go from 75 percent to 90. "There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke indoors or outdoors," said Santa Cruz County Tobacco Education Coalition Chair Richard Salazar.

smokers should smoke it up while they still can.
Typical Santa Cruz. Everything that town does is designed to eliminate fun.
that town reminds me of camel lights in every way
I'm a smoker and I won't even be phased by this stupid smoking ban. I get e-cigs from whitecloudecigoutlet.com and I can smoke them pretty much anywhere. Even in Santa Cruz. :)
That's because you're a fucking spammer.
I'm not a spammer, and you need to watch your language on this site. It is highly-read by people of all ages, including middle schoolers (like my daughter, who just told me about your offensive comment to me).
You're not a spammer. You're just really passionate about a certain product bought only from a certain website.

A.) My switching to e-cigs was a suggestion by my doctor because of the REALLY bad health problems I was experiencing, so YES, I'm passionate about this product. Just like I'm passionate about Starbucks instead of any other coffee, and just like I'm passionate about Apple versus any other computer.
and
B.) Where else would I get this product?? From the only other, higher-priced website that makes them available?? (WhiteCloudCigarettes.com????)
and
C.) Why is it "spamming" for someone to share their passions and opinions about their favorite products?? Am I saying anything untrue? No. Am I getting paid by any company to advertise their products? No.
So what is the big problem here?? Do I really deserve to be called a "fucking spammer?"
I hate to tell you this, but your daughter is going to see plenty of bad language if she's on the Internet for more than 10 minutes. Not every site has to be scrubbed to middle-school level. Tell her she can't read SFist or buy some filtering software or something if you're worried about her seeng a bad word.
I can agree with you there. You're probably right, so I'll give you that.
(My last comment is referring to Angrybat's advice to me.)
yep, just chiming in that it is your responsibility to raise your daughter, not some stranger on the internet.
third hand smoke - one of only three types of smoke more deadly than fourth-hand smoke!

The Health Director's quote about "no safe level" is only true in the same sense that there is "no safe level" of exposure to sunshine. If we want to fairly apply this sort of reasoning to laws supposedly "protecting the workers" then Santa Cruz should also ban patio dining.
After all, sunshine-caused malignant melanoma kills over 60,000 people a year, sunscreens and awnings provide only "partial protection" (similar to ventilation and secondary smoke), and there's no inherent reason why workers should be forced to work in a carcinogenic environment simply to feed the gluttony of inconsiderate Sunners.
Well done on the Pacific Avenue ban! You've finally found a way to deal with the poor and the homeless: shove them off to other places where other people will have to deal with the problem. And you've managed to nicely circumvent any of those annoying little Constitutional protection difficulties while doing so. What's next on your agenda?

As a smoker, instead of thinking "it won't happen here", look at what has happened across the United States. In other states (like New York State for instance) you are not allowed to smoke inside ANY public building. There are even restrictions being placed on a person's residence, if that residence happens to be in an apartment building! What can you do about it? Learn more about what you as a smoker can do to protect your freedoms, and at the same time, improve your health by using the latest technological advancements in nicotine delivery. Find out more about your options at http://www.NoTobacco.net today!
It seems that everywhere we go, there are more and more "No Smoking" zones. However, new technology allows smokers to enjoy their nicotine in a familiar form, without being subjected to No Smoking laws. NO second hand smoke! If you are a smoker, you should at least be AWARE of this technology! It could change your habit completely!
