SPCA to Close On Mondays

Luigi, found at the SPCA, could sure use a loving home!

Sad news. Due to the state's continuing economic woes, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, for the first time in its 141 year history, will close on Mondays. According to DogBlog, "the SPCA has suffered from reduced contributions and staff layoffs (16 employees were let go earlier this month) and its Maddie’s Adoption Center will no longer be open on Mondays in an effort to eliminate a $3.5 million deficit.

Mondays at the SPCA, it seems, were crucial because a lot of pet owners would come in that day, looking for their lost pets. SFGate has more.

Mondays are crucial, yet the powers that be at the facility can't figure out to close tuesdays instead?

Sounds like they laid off the wrong people.

More reason to criticize all those millions spent on building a new pet hospital at SPCA so that they can end the hearing dog training program, layoff numerous staff and close on Mondays due to a shortage of funds.

I have great news folks! The SF/SPCA did eighteen adoptions on Tuesday, which is much higher than the usual number we do. I'm hoping, as I assume most of you do, that losing a day each week won't have a negative effect on adoptions, and it looks like it doesn't.

But who will feed the puppies and kittens???

@RobinSF - staff will still be on site on Mondays - the shelter will just be closed to adoptions.
Actually, this has a silver lining. With one day closed to adoptions and visitors, volunteers and staff have more time to clean from top to bottom, spend one-on-one time with the animals, and give the entire population more attention, training and time. As well, more animals can be examined by shelter vet staff.

well, at least that's some good news.
