Justice of Peace Denies Interracial Couple Marriage License

deliverance_banjo.jpg

A dimwitted justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, recently denied an interracial couple a marriage license. Why? Like we need to tell you why. But we will: said justice of peace, Keith Bardwell, explained to Associated Press his reasoning, "'I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way ... I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Gee, where have we heard that paper-thin argument before?

Anyway, Beth Humphrey, 30, and Terence McKay, 32, the couple who was denied the license, said that they "will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint."

Why are you trying to restrict his religious freedom by objecting to his decision? Don't you believe in freedom of speech? Are you a Socialist?

Didn't you know the universe revolves around Christianity?

Too bad the ol' Bible doesn't mention anything about interracial marriage!

What a dumbass. Seriously though, as a judge he should know landmark SCOTUS cases like Loving v. Virginia:

Now we know what blogging would have been like in 1960.

I used to have that "little retarded boy from Deliverance" as part of the logo on my web page until Warner Brothers sent me a cease & desist. True story.

"some of my best friends are nigras, what's the big deal?"

Anyone know where this lovely couple is registered so I can send them a congratulatory gift (say, cash for their lawsuit)?

no big surprise, chickasaw county is well known for its backwards racial attitude. however, roscoe over in hazzard will marry them no problem. maybe even have a little impromptu reception at the boar's nest.

I have two mixed children. And no, the relationship didn't work out. But, we are still great friends! White couples get divorces too. As for my children, they are LOVED. Shame on Keith Bardwell! You call yourself a christian? Who says this couple has to be married to have children? He's not going to stop that. I'm willing to bet anything that my children are prettier than his!

Pleeeease. This is obviously one of Obama's lies. Everyone knows that white, straight, christian (ie: REAL) marriages last forever and produce perfect, well adjusted children with no issues, and....

... okay, not even my snark can illustrate how fucked up this guy is. Shot out of a cannon, into the sun, is my advice on what to do with him.

Now if you excuse me, im off to tell HR that i wont be coming in to work tomorrow, because i believe electricity is of the devil, and my computer, his tool. And how they cant fire me, because "this is just what i believe". Im really looking forward to getting paid for not doing my job.

This was supposed to be a general comment, not a reply to Jonahsmom. Sorry!

(Though i do think its awesome that shes raising two great kids - kudos!)

What exactly do they use his bathroom for?

Racism: Alive and well in the deep South!

The truth is, he had a cross burning to attend and this was his week to bring the strudel.

You don't have to venture to the Deep South to meet people who agree with Keith Bardwell; San Francisco has its own peasant population who echo Bardwell's sentiment.
I've lived in the Castro for twenty years, and some of the cha-chas from Hee-Haw Hollow are every bit as bigoted as this knuckle-dragger from Louisiana.

Didn't a reporter from SF Weekly or Bay Area Guardian go undercover a few years ago and had a meeting with some of the white supremacists in the Sacramento area?
Don't forget the fatal dog attack on Diane Whipple by Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel's dogs. The perps later adopted that jailed white supremacist.
So, no, you don't have to travel to the Deep South for some old fashioned bigotry and hate.

I bet this guy has a watering hose out back "just in case any coloreds get thirsty workin out back". That just shows you how magnanimous this guy is.

Well, you have to maintain separate water fountains for the whites and colored folk because if you allow them to drink from the same water fountain nobody is happy.

*smacking head against keyboard*

he has "piles and piles" of black slaves in their shacks on the plantation

What makes him dimwitted? The Judge in Tangipahoa Parish based his decision on the documented and published fact that mix-race marriages have a higher rate of disruption.

The CDC in 2002 produced a document under their:

Vital and Health Statistics, Series 23 Number 22 entitled "Cohabitation, Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the United States"

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_23/sr23_022.pdf

It is in this document which they explicitly detail the following statistic:

"Probability that the first marriage breaks up by duration of marriage and race difference with husband: United States, 1995"
The statistic is spelled out clear as day at the bottom of page 19, with the graph on page 20.

http://crime-mapping.com/images/mix-race-marriage-disruption-rate.png

"First marriages in which the husband and wife are both members of the same race/ethnicity are more likely to succeed than those in which the spouses are of different race/ethnicity (table 21 and figure 25)."
"After 10 years of marriage, interracial marriages have a 41-percent chance of disruption and same-race marriages have a 31-percent chance of disruption (table 21)."
Regardless if you agree or disagree with the relevancy, appropriateness, or authority of a Judge to deny a license based on this published statistic, it is fact, and the basis for the Judge's decision.

Base your information on well researched facts before coming immediately to the conclusion that those who do not follow the popular trend are inherently fools.
