Lackluster, middling dancehall performer Buju Banto, crooner of such complex songs as "Kill Gays" (AKA "Boom Bye Bye") has plans to play at the Richmond district's Rockit Room tonight. Oh, and he hates homosexuals and thinks that they should be murdered -- much like a lot of people do, even right here in the Bay Area. Anyway, he might or might not perform his notoriously assy tunes tonight, according to SFAppeal.
There was supposed to be some sort of sit-down meeting (groan) between supes Bevan Dufty, Eric Mar, and the Rockit Room management. But? It never happened. Alas.
In the end, though, reggae is scientifically proven to be harmful to the ear; you're better off getting tanked at Martuni's while listening to people butcher Sondheim at the piano.
Update: Dufty, Mar, and other members of the community met with Banto before he performed tonight. Dufty described the encounter as "a very emotional meeting." Check out Appeal for more. (Well done, Bevan. And: thank you.)

Unless Joseph is tickling the ivories. In which case, Sondheim is forbidden.
Is "Being Alive' so complicated? It's certainly better than "Kill Gays." Actually, it's the exact opposite!
Joseph's stance on Sondheim is unnerving and disheartening.
Why do you guys go on the night "Bad Joseph" plays? No one likes him. He's an asshole. And kind of creepy.
The "Good Joe" plays Mondays. He'll do any show tune except "One" from Chorus Line (which seems reasonable).
You're also better off going to the Mint and joining the karaoke singing hordes.
Thanks, Dufty; yet another reason to not vote for your sorry ass when you run for suzerain of San Francisco. Cojones have various uses; having somebody drape a pair of them over your mouth while you hum show tunes seems to be the only thing that you think they're for.
I'm... not quite sure of the context of your annoyance here, but perhaps it is helpful to point out that the reason the meeting didn't happen was because Banton's management started screaming about intolerance and how the gay community makes allegations but never wants to dialog with the singer. So Dufty and Company said "okay, let's have a chat," and suddenly the musician's camp stopped returning calls and emails.
Also of note, folks rallied to get the promoter to cancel Banton's upcoming show in San Jose. What up, SF?

/ummm, he's related to Pato Banton, right?
Ooh! "Kill Gays", how original...
For the record it should be noted "Kill Gays" is not an actual song. The song he gets all the (justified) criticism for was called "Boom Bye Bye" which he recorded in 1988 when he was 15 years old.
But that doesn't make for a very sensational blog entry.
For the record, it should also be noted that he's been singing 'Boom Bye Bye' all that time and was recently caught on video saying there 'will be no end to the war' between him and the gay community. Oh, and that he was also identified as a perpetrator in at least one gay bashing in the past few years.
But that might make for a too sensational blog comment.
Yes, but a song which, despite claims to the contrary, he still performs live, with much other railing against the homos.

frank chu showed up for the protest
It's true, the song is twenty years old. And we're still waiting for an apology.
Visiting from the land of DCist--
We were walking to Buckshot last night and passed Rockit Bar, there was a small crowd of protesters holding a candlelight vigil, some police presence and a TV van. The concert appeared to be going on as planned and we could hear Buju through the din.
We walked back around 12:30 or so and everything had dispersed.
freedom of speech / what can you do
You can attempt to comprehend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights so that you'd know the appropriate time and place to apply the "freedom of speech" argument, that's what.
Boycotting the eff out of businesses that support bigots seems like a reasonable place to start.
Then again, the huh room in the what neighborhood? Maybe they needed some ahole controversy because nobody is willing to trek out to the hinterlands to their venue otherwise, and are already avoiding the place by geographical default.
