They sure do love our fine President up in Norway! Despite having only been in office 12 days when the nomination deadline passed, the Nobel committee went ahead and awarded Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, apparently as "an encouragement" for him to act peaceably and use diplomacy in the future. Also, this was clearly a Fuck You to Dubya, as ABC 7 News points out, with the Nobel Committee handing this award to the first person who wasn't named Bush pretty much the minute he took he office. Everyone, including the White House, was taken by surprise.

Our "welcome back to intelligent western society" warming gift.
12 days? That is definetly a message.
P.S. UCSF had a biochem nobel prize winner this year.
This is hilarious.
Hey, I've been in *my* job since last September and nobody's given *me* a prize for not invading a country yet!
Richard Cohen has it right:

Comparing Obama's Nobel Peace Prize to a Palin Pulitzer for lit? No. No he hasn't got it right at all.
Congratulations to our president and a new era of American diplomacy!
But that thar negro took away mah flavur dip. He shulda been 'rrested fer that. Now thar givin hem a praize? Whut tha hell, man!
The Nobel Peace Prize already jumped the shark when Al Gore got it for making a Keynote presentation, so I guess this fits.
I here I've been thinking the price of gold had gone up.
More like Nobel Piece-of-the-Action Prize...
What a joke.

Forgive me for stating the obvious....but it's like when milli vanilli won an emmy.
Except that its not.
Witty comment attempt = FAIL.
I'm not sure what the difference between this and a bribe is.
Relevant Twitter post of the day:
Yo, Barack, I'm really happy for you, and Ima let you finish, but Beyonce gets the prize for best "piece" in the world.
This is just sad. Could privileged, white, irrelevant Euro-twats pile any more pressure / unrealistic expectation on BHO? How is it that Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland was allowed to exhibit his paternalistic, plantation-mentality urge to "help the Negro" (the implication in subtext being that he could not achieve much on his own) by openly stating that they awarded the prize to BHO to help forward his political/diplomatic goals.
This is poison. No matter how well intended it will have much the same result as affirmative action; loud voices proclaiming any *real* achievements were brought about by "high-placed" power brokers.
Damn, BHO deserves a chance to make his own mark, without being cast into a position of being perceived as "beholden" to multi-national white power elites.
what has he done?
Let's see...around this time into "Dubya the Brilliant's" first term, we were all recovering from the nightmares in NYC, etc., launching a war in Afghanistan and readying one for Iraq.
Too bad he set the bar so amazingly low, but Obama could end up being a pretty great leader. Methinks they were just getting head of the curve.
