"You Lie," Shouts Tom Ammiano at Gov. Schwarzenegger

This is why getting violently ill sucks. You miss wonderfully uncomfortable stuff like this. See, at last night's Democratic County Central Committee gala at the San Francisco Fairmont, a surprise guest showed up. Who, you ask? None other than Governor Schwarzenegger, making a surprise appearance to speak to the left-leaning crowd. After being introduced by former SF Mayor Willie Brown, Arnold was "greeted by an awkward combination of polite applause, hisses, and shouts."

But wait, it gets better.

Asm. Tom Ammiano heckled Schwarzenegger as he was trying to speak. Brian Leubitz of Calitics reports:

[Schwarzenegger ] was talking with Willie Brown and his entourage for a while. And then, former SF Board of Supes President Aaron Peskin brought him up on the stage. As he began to talk, Asm. Ammiano yelled out "You LIE."

The Governor began to say a few words about how he heard that the Democratic Party event was in the same hotel as a chorus of boos and other random hissing noises rained down upon him. I, of course, was taking pictures with my cell phone. Apparently the Governor felt that he should visit the Democratic event because he "sleeps with one every night." And then proceeded to tell the room that he was "post-partisan" and that he didn't care whether you were a Republican or a Democrat.

Oh yes, it gets even better:

And as he continued, Asm. Ammiano still couldn't believe this man was up on the stage at a Democratic event. The San Francisco Assembly Member yelled something to the effect of "kiss my gay ass" as he left the room.

Then, according to Be_Devine at Calitics, "Senator Mark Leno later gave a brilliant and eloquent smack-down of Arnie's policies that are hurting hundreds of thousands of Californians."

Shut it down, Tom and Mark.

Most telling, however, was who wasn't there: Gavin Newsom. Busy kicking it with Bill Clinton and other famous types, Newsom didn't even bother to show up to say "Hey, how's the chicken?" to the very people trying to get him elected. (Although, what with Jerry Brown commanding an astounding lead, we can't say for sure how many dems remain Newsom fans.) As Calitics goes on to point out, "A Democratic gubernatorial candidate being upstaged by the Republican governor at a gathering of his own town's Democratic party. Ouch!" And how.

Now if you'll excuse us, we're need to go back to replenishing our fluids while hating those who were lucky enough to catch last night's action.

Just goes to show that the left is equally guilty as the right in the decline of political discourse. And of course the best part is yelling "You Lie" is so last season, you'd think an openly gay man would at least get that right.

Yeah. I can't believe that a leading state member of the Republican party wasn't greeted with warm applause and cheers at an event by and for the Democratic party. Made me shed a tear, it does.

"You lie" is old, though.

SFDCCC shindig ≠ State of the Union address from the President of the United States.

Get a grip.

Seriously? You're comparing a former stand-up comedians crack at a conference to the vitriol spewed by the right-wingers?

Jeebus, why don't you just tell us when you stopped beating your wife?

yep. The fringes of both parties are equally guilty/out of touch. Just sayin'

sweet charles: you're so right. i just called someone a liar on craigslist. see how bad it's gotten?

After being introduced by former SF Mayor Jerry Brown, Arnold was "greeted by an awkward combination of polite applause, hisses, and shouts."

That Jerry Brown really gets around!

Not to nitpick, but Jerry Brown is the former Mayor of Oakland.

...and Willie Brown, who actually was Mayor of SF, was the person in attendance.

And that would make for a great stupid short lived ABC type sitcom that would never be renewed – The Mayor Browns.

Chris Daily would make a great wacky next door neighbor.

We’ve already got our gay Will and Grace type character.

Ed Jew would keeping pretending that he was part of the show and security would have to keep escorting him off the set. It just writes itself ...

Don't forget the occasional guest star appearances by Frank Chu.

Shouldn't that be The Mayors Brown?

;)

who votes for these idiots?

the idiots who didn't vote for gallagher.

don't blame me, I voted for Starchild.

// always votes for Starchild

God Bless Tom Ammiano. Arnie and Gavin can go fuck themselves.

Someone should have shouted,"FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! YOU ARE STUPID! YOU ARE A STUPID!" at him.

Really? Newsom wasn't there? What a fucking moron. If you're going to run for governor, you have to go to stupid dinners like this. Who does he think is going to vote for him?

That's nothing compared to fucking your best friend's wife, blaming it on alcoholism (wtf?) and still thinking you're electable at that point.

Good point. How dumb of me.

Should we expect any better of Clown-boy Ammiano?

This is "normal" behavior at the SF BOS meetings he's used to. He get's his oratory skills from Chris Daly.

funny that daly's (and ammiano's) skills have a way of getting him (re-)elected, rather than newsom needing to be appointed in order to get a leg up. that newsom rides the coattails of power and genuine talent (cf. clinton) is not news, however.

Agreed, one D-bag isn't any better than the other,

I know that madly screaming *CHRISDALYCHRISDALYCHRISDALY* is the favorite political tactic of many in this city, but it's really wearing thin.

You do know that Ammiano was involved in city politics when Daly was still a high school student in suburban Maryland. Right?

Well, this incident will certainly come in handy the next time we have to convince a few million fence-sitters that a Prop 8 type amendment is a bad thing.

Or maybe voting for the biggest douchebag will come back into style like it was before 2008.

Being the one who benefited from our dear Editor's violent illness (in the form of sitting in his ring-side seat, about 15 feet away from Ahnold, Ammiano, and Leno), I will be forever grateful to whatever piggy flu is on the attack. Oh, I kid. Kinda.

Ammiano is who he is, and I love him for it. He was well within his right to call the Governator on his thinly-veiled publicity stunt. Willie Brown should have been shouted at too for allowing Arnold to take the stage after crashing into the event. There's no reason for Arnold to speak at a private Democratic party gala which was designed to celebrate and honor our leaders who have been battling Arnold and his Republican cronies to protect Californians from his inhumane cuts to medical and social services. He knew he'd be shouted down, and he relished it.

Can't we just elect Ammiano for governor?

It would be great if Ammiano were content with being a gay professional. Instead, he insists on being professionally gay, making him one-note and boring. He must have been a shitty fucking comic, too, as he is persistently unfunny.

Just as bad as Joe Wilson -- or perhaps worse.

Put a sock in it, Mary.
