Milo Foundation Shelter Shut Down Over Uninhabitable Living Conditions

Get ready for the ninth circle of Hell, persons in charge of the Milo Foundation Shelter in San Rafael. Because you screwed up. It seems, according to CBS 5, the North Bay animal shelter was shut down due to horrible conditions after a Thursday morning surprise inspection.

According to CBS 5's Ann Notarangelo, "The Marin Humane Society shut down the facility, which adopts out cats and dogs, after finding what they say were animals living in their own filth." Captain Cindy Machado of the Humane Society said there weren't enough workers, some animals had contagious diseases and were exposed to healthy animals. She said the facility was permitted for 10 dogs and had well over 40." 40?! Yeah, that's unacceptable.

OK, fine. We're being a b\it hard here. The folks who ran the place, presumably, had the animals' best interest in mind. Initially, anyway. (After all, Milo does do great work.) But, really, if you notice Rover sleeping in his own shit, something is amiss.

Watch the full report on the animal shelter's shut down. Waring: it will give you the blues.

Also, KTVU goes deeper, reporting on the extent of the shelter's conditions. "What we found were layers and layers of greasy grime, fur and feces caked on cage wiring, in the drain, on the floor, on the walls," said Captain Cindy Machado of the Marin Humane Society. "Granted, in their minds we caught them on a bad day. In our mind, it was months and weeks of improper cleaning protocols."

my ex-roommate adopted a puppy from them last spring. he filled out the paperwork, we got in line, and it was first come first serve if you had the $300. they didn't even glance at his application. they did, however, ask for an additional 'donation' which he declined to make.

so somehow, i'm not surprised that it's not a well run shelter.

btw, do those animals need homes now that they're shut down?

This is what happens when animal hoarders and crazy dog/cat people figure out how to make a career out of it. Totally irresponsible, and I'm guessing this entire sad episode stems from a fundamental inability to put animals to sleep.

Sorry to be harsh, but even that Katrina story illustrates a level of, mmm, how should I say, mis-prioritization.

...which is borne out by Ms. Tingle's comments in the KTVU story.

None of you even know the whole story Ms. Tingle is a great person, I happen to know her. she is not an animal hoarder! she rescue's animals. She helps them find new homes!
That news story was such bull crap.
Dogs liveing in there own poop! yeah the dog took a crap over night...guess what that crap doest clean itself!
like she said if they would of waited an hour the cleaners would of had it all picked up.
And that dog that had that bite wound, clearly saw the vet dogs dont shave them self and put stitches in.

In fact it sounds it me like Captain Cindy Machado of the Marin Humane Society, is just trying to make a name for her self.
Plus in that news video those where some happy dogs!
and I didnt see shit any where odd... you would think they would of shown that if it was true.

My husband and I have visited the Milo Foundation several times since they moved in near our home. We’ve spoken with the director, Lynn on those visits and found her to be caring and respectful of the animals. We toured the entire facility and found it to be clean and NOT over crowded. On the flip side, I rescued 4 kitties on the verge of death and took them to the Marin Humane Society where I was told it would be too much trouble to care for them and they’d “put them down”. Of course I did not leave them there and cared for them myself, found them homes and they are healthy well adjusted cats. The “Humane” Society is not so humane! My husband and I will donate to MILO to help them fight this claim which I find hard to believe.

The Marine Independent reported 19 animals.

San Jose Merc reported 30.

Now its 40 animals? Sounds like inflation stoked by MHS, a fierce competitor of the Milo Foundation for funding and donation.

Pixie is a dog who was rescued by Milo Foundation who came from a kill shelter in Merced. (Check him out on his twitter page @pixienoodle).

The Milo Foundation routinely goes to kill shelters in places like Lake County, Merced and Bakerfield to rescue animals that otherwise would end up dead. You think the MHS does this?

Instead, the tax funded MHS has nothing better to do than shut down a competitor based on technicalities and trumped up allegations. This nothing but self interested hypocrisy veiled in self righteousness that will end up killing a lot of cats and dogs.

Milo Foundation is a no-kill shelter scrapping by on donations which is rescuing animals from over crowded state run shelters (which is another sad topic all by itself).

Shame on MHS, shame on KTVU.

Wow. you write this scathing article as if it were a restaurant that got slapped with health violations to save some overhead. It's easy for you to point fingers, but does anybody know how hard it is logistically to run that place, and how little staff and resources they have do to it? I have personal experience with Milo, and I know that they're doing the very best they can for those animals. Before you get upset behind your keyboard, consider volunteering to help them clean feces out of kennels, because that's what they need, not exaggerated and accusatory news pieces.
