Ah, yes, this is what we like: people apologizing for football games. So scary and confusing and lacking climactic eleventh-hour numbers, they are. What are we talking about? Well, actually, it seems Sandy Barbour, Berkeley’s Director of Athletics, sent out a letter, dolling out a huge mea culpa for Saturday's big homecoming game against (the vile) USC. Crowd control was lacking, rendering the game an uncomfortable one for fans.
Dear Cal Football Fans:During Saturday's Cal football game against USC, we know that many of you who attended had an unfortunate and unexpected gameday experience due to the long lines and congestion throughout much of Memorial Stadium. I want to apologize and, at the same time, make sure we move quickly to understand exactly what went wrong and let you know about the steps being taken to address it.
And:
An immediate review after the game found that almost half the crowd entered the stadium through just two gates - Gates 1 and 2 - near the north side of the stadium. The resulting bottleneck caused lines to back up, especially on the concourse level. Similar problems occurred in other areas of the stadium, as well.
Kudos to you, Barbour, for taking responsibility, and in such a very public way. You should think about running San Francisco.(Although we have to point out: crowd issues, like the one that stymied Saturday's game, wouldn't happen during, say, an all-star concert production of A Little Night Music. Something to think about.) But who, pray tell, is going to apologize for all of the trampstamps that littered downtown San Francisco over the weekend? Really, UCS ilk were everywhere, spray tans and all.
Oh, and Cal lost to USC. Big time.

I think people should cut Cal a little slack here, they've never put on this kind of event before.
I blame this all on the hippies. Cal needs a new stadium pronto. Memorial stadium is an embarrassment (for reals, what other school has wood for seats that you have to watch out for splinters). Knock out all the trees and get a moving. They'll grow back.
Cal needs to apologize for the product on the field, not the stadium.
I concur to the hundredth power. Escalating ticket prices (the season tickets in the new stadium are going to be pretty expensive, especially for Cal alumni) and expectations, yet the same results. I really thought we had something different this year. I hate the fact that all of the naysayers were right. Same 'ol bears it seems.
Really, he should be so lucky there were bottlenecks, thanks to all those SC fans that showed up in droves for the game. After that loss, bet there won't be too many Cal fans on those wooden benches.
Actually, Sandy is a she, not a he. And yes, kudos to Barbour. She's constantly impressed as the Athletic Director of Cal, and while the circumstances that created the crowd-control situation at Memorial on Saturday are unfortunate, her response is admirable.
With USC and Oregon out of the way, the schedule only gets easier from here on out and I'm hoping those silly bears can pick themselves up and start winning again. Otherwise, we might not see another sell out crowd in Berkeley til next year's Big Game.
Nothing that a little Undie Run couldn't solve!
they should be using this bye week to hold open tryouts for a real quarterback. riley is fucking joke!
