East Bay High Schoolers Use Sex Appeal to Sell Car Washing Skills?

The kids at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek had a money-making scheme this past weekend. One that, for better or for worse, involved the school's water polo team wearing only regulation Speedos, standing on a street corner, and luring passersby.

Now that we have your attention, this car wash benefit, at right, has stirred much controversy. It seems before Saturday's incident, area girls -- underage women, mind you -- have done the same thing, too, in high school-fundraising efforts.

Hm. Anyway.

The Mayor of Claycord, who writes one of the finest blogs on the other side of the Bay, posed a question: "High school kids standing on a busy street corner while wearing speedos, is it inappropriate, or just a harmless way to promote a high school water polo team's fundraiser?"

What say you, readers? Are you OK with a business model that uses high schoolers' budding sex parts as a way to raise funds? Is it OK for schools, just like Disney, to prostitute their underage students for cash?

I'm not touching this one with a ten foot pole.

there is a slight difference as I see it... don't the water polo players wear those outfits to their games anyway?

"Sexy-high-schoolers-wearing-skimpy-clothing" car washes are as old as dirt, or at least as old as cars were around to have dirt on them. Most likely your grandma's school did it, or your mom at least if you're older. I remember at my high school it was the primary source of funding for the cheerleader squad.

I'd almost say it's an American tradition, to be honest. They're common in the reddest of red states (deep in Mormon country even) and the bluest of blue (Massachusetts, and especially Hawaii). Moreover, in most states (18-is-legal is not very common, most states have it lower), usually around half of the car-washing-folk are legal.

That said, I never wash my car as I don't really like the darn thing anyway (contract forces me to have one). I admit I've been tempted by the Castro car wash behind the Walgreens though.

Maybe we can hire that water polo team to wash the Muni buses. They could really use it.

[Grit teeth, inhale]

I'll refrain from passing judgment on their community standards, and let them resolve it. I wouldn't want them to reciprocate.

None of this was a problem at the Love Parade.

Encinal High kids (Alameda) were doing this the other weekend, too. They didn't look ashamed...

they get points for dressing that bare in this damn cold weather

the castro awaits these fine young boys

This is so wrong. I mean, why is this school allowing its students to go out almost naked in the streets just to sell their car wash service? I'll refrain from passing judgment on their community standards, and let them resolve it.
