Noe Valley Whole Foods Opens Today, Controversy Ensues

wholefoodsnvsf.jpg

The grand opening of San Francisco's fifth Whole Foods is happening right this very second over at 3950 24th Street in Noe Valley. Supervisor Bevan Dufty will be there to cut the tape. Protesters will also be there to make noise. As most of you know, a boycott is in place after WF CEO John Mackey's made (careless?) remarks about health care, much like your drivers license, being a privilege, not a right. Anyway, for those of you into snagging organic produce and carob-covered treats at relatively high prices, have at it. For those of you who refuse (or simply cannot afford) to shop at WF, Foods Co is a neighborhood away. (Really, you can get cheap staples there. Lots of other affordable stuff to be found there, too, folks.)

A boycott/protest definitely sends a message, but if you did that to every business who was headed by a CEO with class bias, well, that would be a lot protesting, I guess.

Also, Whole Foods has $30 fresh ostrich eggs. A random website says that's about ~10 hen eggs. Cuh-razy.

The perfect is the enemy of the good. The entire Whole Foods boycott/protest is organized around the expectations that their customers have of them. It's a shock to find that WF is led by a Hugh Downs sympathizer.

Sure a boycott sends a message. It clearly states that one is not willing to engage in rationale discourse and one would rather just economically punish people with opposing views. So if you want to be a narrow-minded twit, a boycott makes lots of sense.
Mackey's WSJ piece was actually a well-thought out, intelligent explanation of the flaws in "obamacare" style proposals along with suggestions of better approaches. One can certainly disagree with his views, but why try to suppress him and others? (and the only possible purpose of the boycott must be to discourage others from expressing similar views).
It is amazing that on the one hand the left castigates the tea party protesters for a little bit of rowdiness and suggests they are a threat to democracy (even though their actions are mild compared to ACT-UP or ACTION), yet then feels a need to punish someone who expresses views in a rational and civilized manner. One gets the impression that the left's real intent is just to shut down any dissent (which apparently is no longer patriotic).
Is it really too much to ask that people be allowed to express their opinions in a democracy without fear of economic retaliation? Sure the boycott is, and should be, legal -- but it is not something that is good for our society.

...one gets the impression that the left's real intent is just to shut down any dissent (which apparently is no longer patriotic)...

Once you get past that ruse what's really happening will dawn on you. of course by then it's too late, and that's the whole point.

No one's trying to suppress Mackie or Whole Foods for his views, they're just saying "fuck that asshole and his company." There's a difference.

You're being a drama queen, you're not a special snowflake and the world doesn't kowtow to your idea of "good for society." Try paying attention to your own words about difference of opinion rather than treating pushback that you don't agree with as a political apocalypse.

cant afford this place anyway

Wow, you can't get a Wendy's in here to save your life because it's an "evil chain" and yet SF bows down and kisses the feet of Whole Foods. If we're going to bash chains, fine, but can we at least be consistent?

the reason Wendy's isn't here isn't ONLY because its chain. The current mayor wants to tax soda.

Besides I'm not sure Wendy's would be a viable business in SF. a lot of chains (incl McDs) have gone under.

The difference is that Wendy's is great.

Wendy's the greatest fast food - nay, any food - of our time. The fact we have Hooters and not Wendy's is a fucking joke. Hey you anti-chain boycotting dipshits, how did that happen?

by the way, I like Wendy's I'm not advocating for/against it... i was just clarifying that we have a lot of conflicting rules re: chains. So to call anyone anti-chain overstates the case as is reflective of reality.

I mean, look at shoebiz, talk about predatory business people they own EVERYTHING. Buy it and dumb it down... shoebucks is more like it.

Dude: in-n-out. And you got them in the city, Daly City and Sausalito. Who cares for wendy's.

I don't care about health care, but dis Wendy's and it's death panel time.

FWIW, my Firefox spell-checker just told me my misspelling of 'diss' was wrong. I love this county.

I love Hooters.

They serve food? Srsly?

Wendy's not viable? Speak for yourself! Frostys are delicious!

i'm not stopping with whole foods. i'm going to boycott everyone who disagrees with me, because they're obviously evil.

I had a friend that worked for Foods&Co. a few years ago. They shut down for "renovation" and laid off their staff to prevent them from unionizing, as proven by a successful class action lawsuit. So, choose your evils carefully.

Went down there for the opening. A madhouse with seemingly every one and their neighbor clamoring to get a look at the new store. The "protestors" amounted to a half-dozen people around a table set up on the sidewalk outside.

WF now has a policy of matching Trader Joe's' prices on store-brand items (their "365" label). That means that things like conventional milk are WAY less $$ than Safeway. $1.49 for a half gallon, for example. Anyway, it might be worth it for folks to check out some of the prices on that everyday stuff -- it's probably cheaper than you think. But yes, they sure have plenty of pricey inventory as well.

I've never been a WF fan but I am glad to have a grocery store back in the neighborhood.

I'm protesting the protestors by spending $8.99/ per pound for grass fed beef..........and lovin it!

NVGAl: Thanks for the tip!

The protestors should have been forced to shop a the Worst. Grocery. Store. Ever. - the Bell Market this WF replaced...

I'm going to Whole Foods to buy all kind of expensive shit today. Do you know why? Because I don't want everyone to think and do exactly as I do. That douche bag CEO has his opinion and I have mine. Besides, I like overpriced nitrate free locally grown green things with cute labels so bite me.

Just spent $326.23 at Whole Food , you moonbats go find something important to protest

should have taken the staff to McDonalds instead, neocon!

Just spent $326.23 at Whole Food , you moonbats go find something important to protest

Even at WF prices - who are you, Jim Bob Duggar?

5 Whole Foods in the city? I could Four:

Noe
Franklin
SOMA
Potero Hill

What I find interesting is that when the CEO originally wrote his piece in the Wall Street Journal I posted the key points on a website, It got many positive comments from Bay Area people. Then when it was labeled as "conservative" ideas people began the boycotting talk.

We seem to be at a point that the label "conservative" is more important than the content of the ideas.

Daaaaaamn. You posted them on a website!? Did you travel here from the FUTURE?

I find that impossible for no other reason than no one pays attention to what you have to say. Oh, and the lack of a link.

Wow! You find that impossible? Such clear reasoning must absolutely prove me wrong!

donde esta your fucking link bitch

Ladies, ladies, ladies, cant we all just get along? I think the point is, that what makes San Francisco ESPECIALLY Noe Valley, so special is that it stands out because of it's unique ability to NOT be like all the rest. When you start bringing in big business, you lose that unique quality. I like WF as well but if it means infringing on the local business' and taking away from what truly makes SF and in this case Noe Valley so special and unique, then in my mind WF has no place in this "special place". IMHO.
