UC Walkout Events and Live-blog Fun

university_of_california_jpg

Whenever we had walkouts at our protest-happy alma mater, more often than not we would press our lips to a bong and head to the beach and/or a bar for the day. But today's student is a concerned one. That said, the fine folks over at the Daily Clog have an events guide of smartypants things you can do today if you're part of the walkout.

Also, the Clog is live-blogging the walkout and teach-in all day. (Note to Valerie Woolard: what's "five fingers" and why won't you play it?)

Five fingers: the game you play when you're drunk and want to find out other people's nasties. Example: "Never have I ever snorted cocaine off a stripper's ass." And then those who have will put a finger down.

Yeah, that's it.

This one was a bit more G-rated though. It was along the lines of "put a finger down if you're on financial aid," "if you can't get into the classes you need to graduate this semester," etc.

I don't understand what the big hub-bub is all about?

Both the State and the University are running out of money and are asking students to cough up more in tuition (errr, "fees"), so the students are demanding the administration take a pay cut...

or is it about more than this?

The CSU and UC systems are written in to the state constitution as being charged with educating all that qualify at a reasonable cost.

A 30+% increase in a year puts the kibosh on the reasonableness of it while administrators are making salaries from $100k on up.

The point isn't about students "sharing the pain" of the economy, the point is that the students are being burdened at exactly a time when they aren't able to be burdened by a system that is supposed to help them afford an education and ultimately a decent paying job.
