Central Subway Snags $9.9 Million

The Central Subway plan got a boost yesterday care of a $9.9 grant via an unknown donor. (Though, according to Curbed, the Federal Transit Administration might be the culprit.) MTA spokesperson Judson True tells Streetsblog that "the funds would mostly go towards preliminary design work, since preliminary engineering on the project is essentially complete." The total cost for the SOMA-to-Chinatown underground fun will cost a total of $1.57 billion.

According to my precise calculations, that amount should be good for about 57 feet of subway. Almost done!

1.57 billion = 28.5 million fast passes

So does that mean that the central subway will bring 28.5 Million new riders?

No, but then again Muni has never been profitable. Neither are roads.

You're not too far off the mark, Caltrain is hauling about 40K people per day. Divide by some portion that will be new Caltrain riders bound for Downtown, consider that expenditures are amortized over 100+ years (hopefully) and you're in the ballpark. And assuming SF doesn't manage to chase away *all* downtown employers.

Why ride the subway when Muni busses are free?

so lame! i blame all of you apathetic voters and commuters in the outer richmond for not lobbying for the real need for this money.

geary street subway!

wtf!!!
