Ask SFist: Decent Restaurants on a Fairly Tight Budget?

empty_plate.jpg Today's "Ask SFist" comes from the writer of this post. It's our second wedding anniversary next week, and we're on a budget. We always dine at home, usually only splurging on sushi, but we'd like to step out of our comfort zone for this special occasion.

We're ideally looking for $13-18 entrees in the Tendernob/ Downtown/ SoMa area but might be inclined to venture elsewhere, so feel free to mention faves in your own neighborhood. Also, we should divulge that we are meat snobs, who opt for vegetarian if the meat isn't grass-fed/free-range.

Basil Thai is my usual choice when I want cheap & cheerful and also stylish & tasty.

Munch Haven
1244 Market St
San Francisco, CA 94102-4801
(415) 252-0247

Meals cost between $8-$13

Thomas, the owner, has VERY good food

As a veg, Amber India is one of my faves. Some of the entrees (meat) are over $18, but most are not. Also, if you'd consider an anniversary lunch, the buffet is killer.

NO, WAIT! I changed my mind. HEAVEN'S DOG!

Monk's Kettle is becoming my favorite spot for splurging, but just slightly.

Of course, you can easily quadruple your bill by ordering a few beers. But I'm a wealthy(not!) alcoholic so it's all good.

how many monk's kettle locations are there, b/c the mission seems to be outside of their search area.

I second heaven's dog, and would add the orignial Osha Thai on geary - the others ones (especially the one on Valencia) aren't as good and I've heard good things about Cafe Claude - but I haven't been yet.

Read carefully: their search area is pretty much anywhere.

osha on 2nd st is the best one.

you should go to gialina's in glen park!

Monk's Kettle is so overpriced it's baffling.
This one really gets me though..

Pliny the Elder
at Toronado: $4.50
at The Page: $5.00
at Monk's Kettle: $7.75

Why? For whom is this reasonable?

The Tamale Lady makes some damn good tamales. You could get a few for $14 or so. And street food is really popular these days!

Lahore Kahari (O'Farrel and Leavenworth) - Indian Pakistani lacks a romantic ambiance, but the food is awesome and the prices are great!

Mangosteen (Eddy and Larkin) - Vietnamese restaurant. Not the BEST vietnamese restaurant on Larkin Street (still pretty good), but it's defnintely the most romantic with dim lighting and modern furniture. Inexpensive.

Farmer Brown (Turk/Mason) - Soul Food. This one has higher quality, "farm fresh," ingredients than the other two i mentioned. It's a little loud, but still a nice atmosphere for an anniversary (i think). it's also more expensive (~16 per entree).

A La Turca (Geary/Polk) - Turkish Food. Tasty food, good prices. I'm a big fat pig, so i think the portions are a little small.

Farmer Brown it is! My husband's mouth started watering when I told him about it, and we can walk there, which is much more romantic than Muni.

If you're willing to venture afield, the Alamo Square Grill has a great prix fixe before 7 PM, and the regular entrees fall within your price range, too. Quiet, romantic neighborhood place. It's on Fillmore near Grove - take the 21 or the 5.

I second the recommendation for Alamo Square Seafood Grill. It's romantic, and the prix fixe is $13.50 and is one of the best deals in town. The fish is great and fun to order - Hayes Street Grill style, a mix-and-match of fish with cooking style and sauces.

Also, if you take your spouse to Munch Haven for your anniversary, he/she should file for divorce.

$13-18 per meaty entree? Heck, for that Chez Moi.

Zazies on Cole Street!

Nowhere near where you wanted, BUT only 50 yards from the N Judah Stop.

I'm a big fan of Farmer Brown, delicious soul food and a great setting.

Tropisueno is good and affordable, too.

Two suggestions in the Mission -
Flour+Water - super trendy right now, with a long wait, but it is pretty good, and all the entrees are under $20.

Udupi Palace - Vegetarian South Indian food, really tasty and filling, incredibly inexpensive.

If you want trendy, go to Nopalito.

Citrus Club (www.citrusclubsf.com, Upper Haight @ Shrader) has always impressed me for being delicious and also surprisingly cheap. The portions are also as big as your head.

Walzwerk at 15th and S. Van Ness. A meat-friendly and wallet-friendly trip to East Germany. The staff have always made us feel special there.

Please don't go to Munch Haven. It's fine for what it is, but for a special night out it can only end in divorce.

I'm loving the suggestions, y'all. All of these places sound awesome, and I'm sure this list will be helpful to other readers as well. It will be a tough decision!

Lahore Karahi is tops, and Osha Thai is our go-to place. I used to live near Alamo Square Grill and have always meant to check it out -- good to know about the prix fixe. Loved Walzwerk too, and very much look forward to trying Farmer Brown's, since it's in my 'hood.

Egads. If you would consider Osha, do Marnee Thai instead. Other side of town, sure, but it's tasty and close to the N.

I was going to make a suggestion, but it takes like 5 minutes for comments to post and I have better things to do with my RSS reader.

"and I have better things to do with my RSS reader."

That's some tough talk there..

Mifune in Japantown
Baby Blues BBQ
Limon Rotisserie
Flour + Water (mentioned earlier)
Gialina in Glen Park

Pat Pong on 25th/Clement has good and cheap Thai food.

Lavash on Irving is pretty reasonable, and there's a warm (fake) fireplace that is almost as warm as the owner's smile.
