Apparently not all S-curves are a good thing. Ye olde Chronicle reported today that "the drive time from San Francisco to Oakland during the evening commute has taken 57 percent longer, on average, than it did a year ago." And what's to blame, you ask? Why, the new s-curve, of course.
For example, a car trip from I-80 at the Fourth Street ramp in San Francisco going to the MacArthur Maze in Oakland, The Chron goes on to report, "took 10 minutes on the Wednesday after Labor Day in 2008 and 17 minutes for the same trip this year." Motorists still not accustomed to the S-curve, which was installed over this year's Labor Day weekend, are partially at fault as well. And, so are, like, physics and laws of nature and stuff. Or whatever. Anyway, drivers are hitting their brakes more often. Which, it seems, was all part of the evil plan.
Over at SFist HQ, located next to the bridge overpass in SOMA, we can confirm that the bridge is way more congested as of late. Also, please stop staring inside our windows and honking, creepy drivers.

the new s curve sucks. i was tempted to change my work schedule but when i left for the bridge at 7:30 the other night, it STILL took me almost an hour to get home.
Stop walking around naked, and we'll stop staring.
The thing that bugs me most I think is the people that hard break around the curve because they aren't going 40-50 on the approach. Let us veteran drivers have a side so we don't have to deal with the pacific americans slamming on their mini van breaks during the turn.
yeah I have to agree on that one. I drove the curve for the first time last week, and I was going about 50 on what I think was an easily negotiable curve. Suddenly, everyone in front of me started breaking during the curve, causing me to have to break. Amateurs!
It's an incentive to get your ass on BART or a ferry.
Reason #????,dang lost count, for not owning a car.
Also forgot which Reason # saying, "At least I ain't stuck in that mess" in the mornings watching the news while drinking my coffee is.
So, people are speeding (I used to make that commute all the time, the posted limit isn't any where near the speed people drive in either direction), so because they are speeding and not planning ahead like they are supposed to, they come in to the curve too fast and have to brake which causes the typical "oh my god I have to brake, too" thing.
Wah.
Probably they need a more substantial traffic calming measure than a reduced speed limit sign. Rumble strips or bollards or something.
If everyone could learn how to drive, we would be fine. Not going to happen in this state. We are the worst drivers, bar none!
No shock, S-Curves are used on race tracks (called Chicane) to control speeds as the driver need to slow down before entering them. So tie that in with a bunch of idiot drivers who cant understand how to drive one at any speed you should expect a slow down.
Off topic,
I just hope before they tear down the old bay bridge they will allow some drag racing on it ;)
weirdly it's shaved 10-12 minutes off of my reverse commute in the evening...from gilman st. in berkeley to 101 north golden gate bridge exit, and consistently too...i love it. and can't figure it out...
It's done the same for me when I'm coming from the Ashby street exit, but I have noticed that my commute is a few minutes longer than it used to be.
Clearly peninsula-dwellers are better drivers.
Once again proving my point that people from California can't drive for shit.
Put down the coffee, iPhone, stop texting and close the mirror.
Try some of the "S" curves back east, in the snow, with ice and then get back to me.
I gleefully await the first light drizzle so you idiots all start plowing into one another.
I demand that the bridge be torn down and made straighter so I can safely send text messages while I drive!
The new S Curve confuses and scares me. Must blame critical mass.
Okay, so the new bridge won't be completed till 2013 or whatever, WHY oh why did they not wait till the last minute to change the highway pattern?? As far as I can tell they have a LOT of construction to do to connect the two.
I'm no engineer but it seems to make better sense not to fuck with the old bridge till the new one's ready.
Get used to the S-curve people. We got 4 years to enjoy it.
Because they need the space inside of the S-curve to work on the new bridge.
They need the space inside of the S-curve to begin the next part of the new bridge.
Maybe sfist.com should hire a few of the hordes of unemployed programmers that are everywhere these days to make a commenting system that works and doesn't have the endless "Please wait..." like every other blog in the world seems to be able to do.
