Scenes from a Bike Accident

Hopefully, everyone got their anti-cyclist venom out yesterday, and we can turn now to this scene of unfortunate pain and near tragedy. It looks like a poor cyclist was smacked by a Sports Utility Vehicle going in reverse on Wednesday in Golden Gate Park. Here we give you a pic of the cyclist and after the jump, one of the Toyota 4Runner that hit him. (via SF Citizen)

Ok, who is going to start?

From LA, what else is there to say

Went to school in LA does not equal from LA, but congrats on being an assumptive City snob!

the rider appears to be wearing skin tight clothing, but not of the venom inducing hipster variety. he will be spared.

How do we know the SUV was in reverse, and the cyclist did not just rear-end him?

The linked article says that the photographer was there when it happened, so I would assume they got the information from him or her.

I am the photographer. The statement that the truck was in reverse in motion when the collision occurred was made by the SUV's driver, and corroborated by another cyclist who witnessed the accident. No one involved was of the hipster ilk.

These are the situations for when your mother always admonished you: Make sure you wear clean lyrcras (with absorbent cotton padding).

How fast was the car backing up if ramming the cyclist completely knocked out the window?
Geez, how's the cyclist doing?

Not as fast as the cyclist, most likely. I certainly ride at a high speed through that area, and I'm sure the cyclist was doing so too. Combined speed = force of collision.

It does seem from the lack of skid marks and force of impact, that the cyclist had not seen it coming until perhaps the last moment. In my cycling experience, lycra body suits often come with a lot of head-down riding. Although I did not witness the collision itself, it seems to me that neither party was 100% at fault. Out of fraternity, though, I have to sympathize with the cyclist. I mean, come on. Ouch!

I contacted SF General. They are unable to provide information on patients' condition without their name, which is maybe the only info I didn't get at the scene.

If anyone knows the cyclist and info as to his condition, it would be nice to hear that he's doing well.

Thanks,
Nate

thanks for not blurring out the lic. plate

i'm guessing that it's another douche bag driver who backs up using their mirrors rather than twisting around and actually looking in the direction they're going.

yeah... that's a pet peeve of mine up there w/ cyclist that cut in front of drivers on a turn.
