Newsom, You Are the Father: Baby Montana Links

baby_montana_newsom.jpg

SFist has, for the most part, spared you any vile "baby bump" talk during Jennifer Siebel-Newsom's pregnancy. But now that SF Mayor Gavin Newsom and Jen Jen are first-time parents -- Jennifer had a c-section a little after 12:30 p.m. today -- everyone online is abuzz -- yes, abuzz -- about it.

Here's what people are saying. Ahem:

7x7's Catherine Bigelow: "Not surprisingly, the 'revolution' was Twitter-ized by the proud, but nervous, papa to his more than one million 'followers.'"

Eve Batey at SF Appeal: "Jennifer Siebel, the mother-to-be, was not due until next week, but (speaking as someone who was pregnant in summer heat herself) given the weather report for next week, Baby girl Newsom's timing couldn't have been better"

N Judah Chronicle's Greg Dewar: "OMG that is the name they picked? Awesome."

Valleywag's Ryan Tate: "Gavin Newsom, the heavily-lacquered lefty-sun-God mayor of San Francisco, has the most progressive technological track record of any California gubernatorial candidate..."

SFGate: "New daddy tweeting again."

SFBG: "Gavin tweets, while Jennifer gives birth?"

NBC Bay Area: "[Newsom] turned to his closest Twitter friends for advice on diapers and feeding."

laughingsquid: "congratulations @GavinNewsom on the birth of your baby girl"

brochtrup (AKA Brock Keeling) "@gavinnewsom get yourself some Yo Gabba Gabba! dvds at once. babies mainline the stuff."

Gavin Newsom: ""Jen is doing great.. Not sure she is happy I am on Twitter."

I can't believe they didn't name the little fucker "Suliman".

I'm disappointed to hear she had a C-Section. Scheduled, I'm sure.

Well it's been on her calendar for months.

i was born via c-section. but i'm a twin, so i think my mom had to do it. and my head wasn't squeezed to a strange shape. so there's that too. yay!

The rate of medically unnecessary c-sections in this country is out of control. I'm in nursing school and currently doing maternity rotations in the City and the hospital I'm at has a lot of "too posh to push" Pacific Heights mothers. The epidural rate is 95%! It's called labor because it's HARD work! I've read scholarly articles concerning women requesting c-sections for their first birth before labor starts because they had relatives who had c-sections after long non-progressing labor. Plus some women, believe it or not, don't want to stretch their vagina.

Don't get me wrong. My fiance was born via c-section after he presented ass first for a home delivery. Perhaps Jennifer Newsom needed a c-section but with the current trends among most wealthy urbanites I wouldn't be surprised if she elected it without it being a medical necessity. And it seems now that most are stretching medical necessity.

And Brock, with twins and a vaginal birth, chances are most are twins are not both head down. And, after the first twin is born there is an issue with the second twin having the umbilical cord presenting first causing complications, making a c-section medically necessary. But it isn't impossible but really difficult.

I will be the first to admit that I know very little about childbirth and related issues so I must ask, why are elective c-sections bad? Are they any worse than the countless "medically unecessary" procedures performed every day? Wouldn't the choice to have this procedure fall under the umbrella of "reproductive rights?"

C-sections are major surgeries and can include numerous complications, infection being the biggie. You basically are out of commission for two weeks. Also, chances are if you have one c-section you will have c-sections for your subsequent pregnancies. VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean) are somewhat risky in that there is a chance of uterine rupture. Personally, if I had a choice, I wouldn't want my uterus sliced open.

We are supposed to vaginally give birth for a reason. The birth process is best for the baby and the mother. There are triggers during childbirth that tell the baby that soon it will no longer be relying on its mother for basic physiological functions, such as breathing and circulation. Also, some studies have shown that asthma and c-sections might be related because of the lack of sinus compression during birth. It's good for the mother because she is able to care for her baby right after birth.

I don't know if c-sections are worse than other elective surgeries, like say cosmetic surgery. I guess I don't understand why people would want to have surgery.

I'm more old fashioned when it comes to childbirth. Women chose to have c-sections everyday and get them because doctors and hospitals want the loads of money that come with c-sections (two extra nights in the hospital, etc.). I don't know if I'd call that reproductive rights.

Named her Montana? What is he, courting the Disney vote already?

damn, did they actually take the time to say that name outloud a few times? montana newsom. montana newsom. too many n's. sounds like nanana in the middle. not good.

congrats, breeders!

Good thing they didn't marry in I-d'Ho, or Massachusetts; she'd be in the 7th grade before she could spell it correctly.

wait - the actual Gavin Newsom was on twitter - or did he have his "Twitter assistant" in the delivery room?

He had a nurse call the Twitter assistant with the news.

Why the C section? Why the name of a fat girl? Tessa Montana has a better flow to it. Montana is definitely a fat girls name. They should have called her" Twitter Balboa Newsom"

Congrats Gavin... you're now officially a DILF! =)

Newsom is just covering his bases by having a kid with a dopey sorta hot actress. That way, when he needs some tweens to date in another 15 years when Seibels ass gets too old and fat, he can hit on his daughters girlfriends.

Yeah, I said it. Dating a 20 yr old hottie Mountz. What a douchebag.
