In an effort, we assume, to curb the (racist?) "you lie!" hysteria stemming from a sect of indignant Republicans over Obama's health care plan, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made the following, somewhat confusing statement this morning at a press conference.
I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw this myself in the late '70s in San Francisco, this king of rhetoric. ... It created a climate in which violence took place. ... I wish we would all curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements and understand that some of the ears that it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statements may assume. ... You have to take responsibility for any incitement that [the speaker's words] may cause.
Oh, and she choked back tears while say it.
Anyway, Pelosi was, of course, referring to the violence that followed the murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk by Dan White way back in 1978. It seems she fears that the anger at Klan-like anger over President Obama might erupt into something more. Watch her emotional press conference via New York Times.

All hail the King of Rhetoric!
Wow, she is really losing it; her comments make no sense. Is she really that detached from reality?
Considering back in the day you could buy Bill and Hillary shooting targets, it's only a matter of time before we have Obama and Pelosi ones.
It is interesting to watch the mental break down of one of the king pins of the Progressive movement. Its a "twofer" week with Peanuthead Carter babbling stupidity and now Queen Pelosi really showing her colors. Folks this woman is insane ..... and she heads the senate. Country is going down the tubes
Cry moar neocon!

When bemoaning someone's fitness for office, it helps to understand what office they actually hold. She's doesn't "head the Senate"; she's the Speaker of the House.
They're very different legislative bodies. Schoolhouse Rock told me so.
Brock: Is that a full block quote? I saw a number of "..." in the statement you quoted.
Yes, Spysea, Speaker of the House Pelosi heads the Senate. Your grasp of the intricacies of workings of our various branches of government is impressive.
Just out of curiosity, did you live in SF during the late '70s? I did - and I still tear up when I recall that horrible day when Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Milk were murdered.
And Brock: I suspect Speaker Pelosi was referring to the assassinations. The response of the City ot these murders was non-violent and moving: a candle-light march that stretched from the Castro to City Hall.
It wasn't until six months later, when Dan White was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder that the community reacted with anger and violence - understandably so, in my view.
Sorry for the history lesson - but for those of us who actually experienced these events, it remains a very sad and emotional chapter in the City's history.
If you haven't guessed by now, Spysea is SFist's equivalent of that guy who spends all day pacing back in forth in front of the milk/sugar dispensers at Starbucks. Lord knows why he's tolerated, but he is, so aside from intermittent requests to "cry moar, neocon," we pretend like we can't see him.
I was a wee lad then (although I was only one of three in my HS to get sent home for wearing black armbands on "Moratorium Day".)
I ask my elders - was the Milk assassination preceded by a runup of looney-tunes oaths and vague death threats? Or did it come out of the blue when White just snapped? Was White one of those those guy you say later, "Yeah I always thought he'd be the kind of guy that would come to work and start shooting people?"
"Since the race for the California State Assembly, Milk had been receiving increasingly violent death threats. Concerned that his raised profile marked him as a target for assassination, he recorded on tape who he wanted to succeed him if he were killed, adding: 'If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.'"
Also, look up the Briggs Initiative and Anita Bryant for a flavor of the times... There were a lot of people who weren't very happy with the idea of gays coming out of the closet.
And one other thing: Dan White may indeed have "snapped" - but he had his wits about him sufficiently to enter City Hall through a basement window, thus avoiding metal detectors; to load his gun with hollow-point bullets; to shoot the mayor three times in the chest and shoulder, followed by two more shots in the head at close range; to reload his gun and walk down the hallway seeking out Supervisor Milk; to shoot him five times, including twice in the head at close range.
Got it.
I love her.
I think she's great and I'm proud she's my representative in Congress.
