Proving to be a woman of her word, San Francisco DA Kamala Harris refused to kowtow to public pressure that demanded the death penalty in the murder of a man and his two sons. If you recall, Edwin Ramos (a 22-year-old illegal immigrant/MS 13 gang member with two prior felonies, an assault of a Muni passenger and the attempted robbery of a pregnant lady) is charged with killing Tony Bologna and his sons Michael and Matthew in June of 2008. According to KGO, prosecutor Harry Dorfman made the following "surprise" announcement in court yesterday: "The District Attorney has decided to seek the special circumstances penalty of life without parole; we will not seek the death penalty in this case." Harris, who strongly opposes the death penalty, has never sought capital punishment in any case.

I'm impressed that Kamala Harris stuck to her principles in such a difficult case. You just can't oppose the death penalty and then go after it sometimes.
The US already kills "only the guilty ones" and we know for a fact that a certain percentage are not guilty at all. Especially if they are of color. The fact that we know this and still do it in the US is amazing to me.
problem is that pro-execution people will lambaste her for being soft on crime. if she compromised on this she'd be just another law-enforcement officer with situational ethics, i.e. a politician. she'd definitely get nowhere quick if she became merely a semi-ethnic version of ethically compromised attorneys everywhere.
Good for her. While I won't deny that she has faults her policy against capital punishment will cause me to continue to side with her against challengers who don't.
Perhaps we could pass some sort of legally-binding resolution to the effect that the DAs office will never seek capital punishment and vote for someone who might do a slightly more effective job in all the other, more common aspects of the position.

Sure, they always say that housing a prison for life is CHEAPER than putting them to death.

i grew up with the Bologna boys, schooled with them at Rooftop and latchkey afterwards.... I would walk to Douglas Playground nearly every day with Michael, little matthew was always a sweetheart... Truth or dare on the hill with Michael and Andrew... Touch football at Christopher park. Basketball on the courts at Douglas. And all summer, at douglas..Trips to Great America, Giants Games..This was a true, whole, loving San Francisco family.. Mrs. Bologna was the supermom to everyone, chaperoned every trip, she loves her children. This man stole all of this, and these are just my memories, as an external friend. Think of their Mother. Shame on Kamala..... It disgusts me that this monster will be allowed to live. He stole this. he deserves to die. He took away my friends, he destroyed an incredible family. Not live in a cushy prison; where he will probably get to link up with all his fckin gangster friends, watch tv. MY taxes will go to support this fcking monsters costly survival of a lifetime in prison?????????? Kill him. Fuck kamala harris. This is an animal, not a human. he should be put down.
