UPDATE: Reopening of Bay Bridge OPEN! Delayed at Least One Day

UPDATE: Well, that was a nice surprise. The bridge opened at 7 a.m. this morning. It's been inspected and is now safer than when it closed.

Transportation officials announced at 5 p.m. today that they will need an extra day to repair the newly discovered crack on the Bay Bridge, and therefore the bridge will reopen at 5 a.m. on Wednesday instead of tomorrow morning.

In preparation for the ensuing chaos, BART will be running longer trains tomorrow -- but will not be running overnight trains this a.m., and ferries will be added to routes from Alameda/Harbor Bay, Alameda/Oakland, Larkspur and Vallejo. Check 511.org for transit and detour info.

Additionally, how was your out-of-town commuting this weekend, readers? We returned from Lake Tahoe yesterday afternoon, and it took us about two hours to get from I-80 onto the I-580 onramp en route to the Richmond Bridge and U.S. 101.

Isn't it just strange that BART originally threatened to strike during the Labor Day weekend, and instead one of our main bridges is out til' Wednesday?

I didn't go east of Divasadero this weekend and had a fun, sunny, relaxing one.

In fact, I'm still so leaned-back I can't even spell Divisadero right.

Good one, BART. Wouldn't want anybody to even think you were capable of staying open late.

One more pleasant day without the east bay riff raff mucking up the joint.

Enjoy it while it lasts!

i'll admit it, i'm straight screwed.

it was a great excuse to stay in the east bay all weekend though!

I went to get drunk in the east bay on Friday night, since BART was open all night... I could just take my bicycle on the train! They didn't really mention anywhere that not all BART stations are open all night. Ended up having to do some extra bicycling to get to one of the lucky open stations, and then had to get off at Powell, because the next stop wasn't until 24th St.

I really don't think they covered this some stations open 24 hours thing very well...

came in and out from the sleepy south bay for saturday and monday afternoon/evenings, no problems with traffic at all..
*phew*

sucks about the bridge ..

Had a fun Friday night that involved me tackling a sidewalk with my face. Stuck around the house the rest of the weekend. So no problems with traffic.

This town needs a gay bar called the Top Saddle.

Traffic to and from treasure island was great. Me and two rows of orange cones all the way to Folsom/Fremont exit at about 60mph. Kinda looked like the city had been abandoned.

In other news, the delay was only 2 hours instead of one day. Traffic is already going across the bridge and everything seems fine thus far.

So, if they had already announced that the bridge was going to be closed another day, why "race" to make an important safety fix?

I wonder how many people jammed on BART this morning to find out the bridge actually re-opened sorta on-time after all.

I mean, I know it's not only commuters that use the bridge, but still, the whole thing seemed pretty ridiculous.

yay i was able to drive in!

there was absolutely no line at the toll plaza at 8:15. i'm sure bart was slammed. thank god i wasn't on it.

Well, you have to take the thing every day it sounds like, I only go over it once a month or so. Me, I'd be a little warier of how CalTrans handled it. Not saying it's unsafe, I'm not an engineer or in construction or anything, but the whole process seemed bizarre, from the false-alarm delay to the rushing to repair to the fact that they only found this crack (which they would've needed to shut down the bridge to fix anyway) seemingly by accident.

I wonder how long it will be until the first truck hits that bypass curve too fast and dumps its load across four lanes.

i was thinking that this morning too. that curve is much sharper than i thought it would be.

Drive home from BRC was a piece of cake. Starting at 5am helped.
