Final Notice: Bay Bridge Closes at 8 p.m.

Bridge Closed Sign.jpg

As Labor Day Weekend creeps to a dramatic opener, getting over the Bay Bridge will come to a halt in, oh, less than six hours from now.

In addition to completing the $6.2 billion earthquake-safety project, reports SFGate, "there are plans to change light bulbs, smooth out the asphalt and demolish the temporary toll plaza on the far-right side of the approach to the upper deck." Call boxes will be fixed, the tunnel will be cleaned, trees trimmed, and signs given a facelift.

Remember: BART will run all night during the bridge closure. Go here to find out what stations will be open for business during the wee hours of the night.

I'll speak for everyone: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, three day weekend + (slightly increased) tunnel crowd - bridge crowd = :O)

Not that I mind the officially sanctioned reduction of B+T, but also as a still-relative newcomer to the bay area, I really am curious:

Why close the bridge, like clockwork, on Labor Day weekend? Is it the goal to inconvenience as many people as possible?

There are a few things they have to do as part of building the new bridge that can not be done while the bridge is open. So they schedule those closings to coincide with the three-day weekend to inconvenience as few commuters as possible while having that extra day of closure to work with.

Apparently traffic is lightest on Labor Day weekend compared to any other similar period.

Woo to BART for doing so! This means less drunk drivers on the road! Think of the positive, people.
