Some Quickie Highlights at Outside Lands This Weekend

outside-lands-banner.jpg The weather for Outside Lands this weekend is looking downright grand, so for those of you with tickets and those still on the fence, SFist brings you this roundup of highlights.

It's been dubbed "quite possibly the most Gen X music fest ever created" (hat tip John Hughes Is Dead), and certainly with headliners Pearl Jam (who have a new album out, don't hate) and Dave Matthews Band (feel free to hate, but we know they're a guilty pleasure for some of you) the crowd is bound to skew more to the 30- to 45-year-old end of things. Not to mention the Winehaven tasting tent -- we'll say no more. Below, our highly subjective picks for music acts not to miss. (Full schedule here, iPhone app here.)

FRIDAY
1:45 p.m. - Akron/Family
If you dig that 70s guitar-and-harmony thing a la Fleet Foxes', you should check out these guys.

2:30 p.m. - Los Campesinos!
Don't be fooled by the name -- these boys hail from Cardiff, Wales and their sound is raw, playful and punky. If it's not your thing you can pop over to Loop Station! at 2:45.

4:10 p.m. - Blind Pilot
They're from Portland, super folky with great lyrics.

outside-lands-tom-jones.jpg 5:00 p.m. - The National
'Nuff said.

6 - 10 p.m. - During the evening hours you have your pick between the eclectic assortment of Tom Jones, Q-Tip, San Francisco's own Tea Leaf Green, Thievery Corporation, Incubus, and of course, Pearl Jam. Work it out for yourselves, and we advise jumping ship before the encores in order to squeeze on that N-Judah / 5-Fulton.

SATURDAY
12:45 p.m. - The Dirtbombs
SF Weekly writes, "The Dirtbombs twist their native Detroit's two most illustrious musical lineages — song-crafted soul and pile-driver punk — into an elegant braid." We'll take their word for it.

3:10 p.m. - Dengue Fever
Listen to this Cambodian pop band's "Sleepwalking Through the Mekong."

bat-for-lashes.jpg
Bat For Lashes
4:55 p.m. - Bat for Lashes
They're She, that is Natasha Khan, is English, moody, and awesome. (Or check out 60s Brazilian trio Os Mutantes at 4:50.)

5:40 p.m. - TV On the Radio
Unless you're a huge fan of Will.i.am and Fergie's by-the-book pop, you'll want to catch TV On the Radio doing their unclassifiable, semi-psychedelic best.

For the evening, you've got The Mars Volta and Conor Oberst and Dave Matthews, so, yeah. Your call.

SUNDAY
12:50 p.m. - Bettye LaVette
Don't miss this chance to the The Great Lady of Soul.

2:15 p.m. - Atmosphere
Nobody does angry white guy rap like this dude.

3:55 p.m. - Calexico
If you don't already know this Arizona-based act that beautifully blends indie rock and mariachi, you should.

6:05 p.m. - M.I.A.
You already know she's pissed having to open for Tenacious D instead of the Beasties, but you've got to hear her. And if she's phoning it in, just hop over to see Band of Horses at the Sutro State at 6:40.

Tenacious D will be doing their schtick at 6:50, and soon it will be time to trek back through the Sunset.

And of course, for all those sitting this one out, you can watch the whole thing live on YouTube.

I don't want to be a nitpicking, Pitchforkian brat, but Bat for Lashes is one person, Natasha Khan.
