Senator Edward Kennedy, noted blue blood brother, passed away at home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts late last night. He was 77. His family said, "We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever... He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them without him."

In a statement, President Obama labeled him the "greatest United States Senator of our time," going on to say:

Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy. For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts. I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time. And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today—to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family."

Also, former first lady Nancy Regan is "terribly saddened."

Since he was reasonably old when he died, does this mean the Kennedy curse is officially broken?

I guess we shall weep for what I see as someone who used his political fame and his annointed status to get away with murder. Remeber Mary Jo Kopechne?

No. Never before now. This is brand new information. I am sure your comment is the only time I will see that name on the internet today.

When Bush and Cheney get hauled before a court of law for war crimes related to starting an illegal war in Iraq that has murdered thousands of innocent civilians as well as the crime of authorizing torture, THEN I'll maybe consider some legitimacy to the cries of "Remember Mary Jo."

Hmm, so certain tragic innocent deaths are more tragic and innocent than others? Interesting theory.

Nice use of a false equivalency. When the Pavlovian bleating of "Remember Mary Jo" gets blathered about, I don't hear a legitimate argument. B/c the same bleating mouths don't seem to get as riled up about the umpteen offenses committed by others in power.

And yes, sending the United States down the road of violating the Geneva Conventions, authorizing TORTURE and committing war crimes is far, far worse than Kennedy getting off for a fatal car accident.

Wow, I wish I had the moral superiority to proclaim whose lives are more valuable than others.

I don’t understand defending the actions of one generations-rich, family-connected white man who got away with murder, while simultaneously chastising the actions of another generations-rich, family-connected white man who got away with murder.

And if soliciting sympathy toward Kopechne’s family is “Pavlovian,” then what do you call your war cries? Potato, potahto.

Obviously, when Bush meets his maker, he’s going to have several hundred thousand dead souls to face. So forgive me if I think that ol’ Ted was afraid of dying, knowing that Mary Jo would be the one throwing the switch that makes the floor fall out from underneath him. She's entitled.

first, you mean the manslaughter. Second, the manslaughter for which he was convicted and sentenced and has not defended. Third, the politician who flat out asked his consituency if he should continue in light of said manslaughter and was overwhelmingly supported to continue.

That the guy to which you refer?

Fact is, the guy lived with a terrible mistake and made the best of what could have so easily been a life thrown away.

Kennedy actually pled guilty and received a suspended sentence. More recent miscreant politicians just lawyer up like the pussies and weasels that they are. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

Biden probably could have picked a better word than "anchor" to describe Ted Kennedy.

I am only sad b/c cancer is a tragic disease. Otherwise, Ted Kennedy will always be remembered for a blighted legacy
