While news of another batch of layoffs at the Chronicle isn't particularly newsworthy in this economy, the California Media Workers Guild posted the following missive yesterday.
Chronicle Unit Chair Michelle Devera issued the following notice to members today:The Guild was given a "heads-up" today that more layoffs are in store for The Chronicle. There were no details as to numbers or departments, but additional information was expected within a day or two.
Arrangements are being made for Guild leadership to meet with management representatives. If we hear anything, we will let you know. As always, please check our Web site for updates.
In solidarity,
Michelle Devera, Unit chair
"In solidarity." Hm. Where have we heard something like that before?
Anyway, stay strong, Chron scribes and other assorted members. We know you'll land on your feet, prove that democracy and copy-editing will not die at the cruel and cold hands of the interwebs, etcetera, etcetera, and so forth. For help getting back on your feet and getting back in the game, go here and here.

I vote CW Nevius...
i second that motion. for that matter, why not just get rid of all of the columnists and keep the news content? less opinions, more facts, please.
ugh, they're cutting to the bone. The last time I bought the Chronicle was the day after Obama won the election. I have seen the paper transform over the years - ugly layout/design, shitty local reporting, and worthless op-eds. As for international news, if I want to read wire copy I'll go to Yahoo or Google News, at least the news is still fresh. I hope they can Debra Saunders, she is a nobody in the conservative pundit universe. Why not run columns by perpetual drunks Pat Buchanan or Christopher Hitchens. Do it for the lulz SF Chronicle!
Although people losing their income is never cause for celebration, I find it hard to feel sorry for the Chronicle staff. Idiotic local coverage ( i.e, scenesters), complete avoidance of world/national news stories and over the top op-eds have made the paper nothing short of laughable, and I can't image any of us suffering from lack of access to all the Chron has to offer.
any word on who got the ax?
there's no reason to buy this "paper" anymore. (there's no news in it anyway so it's just pricey pulp)
Just let it die. I certainly will continue to read the paper on line and not click on any of the ads.
