We just got word that there is a rather large roaring in the financial district. Or, as our tipster informed us, there's a "[b]ig ass fire in the Financh right now." Oh dear. "Sirens everywhere, smoke smellable all over Embarcadero Center," we're told
We'll update as soon as we know more.
Update11:15 a.m.: This is HORRIBLE. Though unconfirmed, we have word (and photo) that the fire might be coming from Perbacco.
Update 11:30 a.m..: It is might be happening at Perbacco. How terrible. Word is Umberto Gibin, owner of Perbacco, is standing next to the firetrucks and hoses. It's a horrible scene outside, we're told. No word of any injuries.
Update 11:37 a.m.: SFist reader Taylor Pipes tells us, "a building engineer observing outside was telling me the fire / smoke appeared to be coming out of a grease trap piping system causing a lot of smoke."
Update 11:46 a.m.: Tadich Grill it is! Appeal and BCN report that it's Tadich Grill.
Pipes tells us that, thank god, Perbacco is still open today. "Perbacco has a sign saying open for biz today...police tape around Tadich Grill storefront," we're told.
Update 11:58 a.m.: "Cable cars on the California line cable cars. Shuttle buses are picking up the slack," says Appeal.
Update 12:20 p.m.: San Francisco's "oldest restaurant" has been "severely damaged," reports CBS 5. Also, the fire, which started in a flue, is now out and cable cars are running again. Yay.

I've heard sirens for a few minutes (near Sansome and Market) but I don't see or smell smoke. Maybe these sirens are unrelated.

Wow, I smelled it before I heard the sirens and saw this.
The odd occasion where my hyper-sensitivity and paranoia proves correct.
I saw a similar image from my office. It seems to have calmed down a bit, as the smoke is not as dense. I'm not sure if it could be Perbacco...unless it was the very back of the building because I think the fire is coming from Sacramento or Halleck.
I'm on Sansome between Sacramento and Halleck, and all clear looking down Sacramento from my window--maybe Halleck.

It looks like it's coming from the ventilation system, which would lead down to Perbacco's kitchen. So either a fire in the kitchen or up top at the filters, maybe?
My awesome dentist (Dr. Urick) is in that building too.

CBS5 and ABC7 are both reporting that it's Tadich Grill that's on fire. Can anyone verify?
The firefighters have their ladders on the roof of Tadich, and that's how they are getting access from california. But I still wasn't able to tell where the smoke was coming from. Here's my shitty picture from my phone that I still don't know how to work. You can tell it's Tadich though.

Those Tadich chefs seem to be taking it in stride in photo #11, which makes me think it was just a lot of grease trap smoke and not a ton of damage.
Well that sucks. But you have to think the Tadich has been through worse.
I just stuck my head into Tadich (police tape is down) on the way back from lunch and not surprisingly, the damage seems to be contained to the kitchen. The dining area looked free of any smoke or water damage and didn't even smell.
On the contrary, I am deeply saddened by today's fire.
Tadich will reopen tomorrow morning. Everything seems normal at Perbacco.
Damn...was hoping the california cable car would never return...so much for dreams
