People are crying foul after SFPD had the unmitigated gall to hand out citations to people boozing it up in Dolores Park. Drinking alcohol in San Francisco parks, as most of you know, is verboten. No matter how many shows at Amnesia you've attended. No matter how often you prattle on about the salted caramel at Bi-Rite Ice Cream Shoppe. No matter how age-inappropriate your haircut and attire is. Drinking in public is illegal.
According to Dolores Park View, "Mission Station Chief, Steve Tacchini had issued new orders [Thursday] morning ordering the drinking in Dolores Park to be brought under control." So, people were busted yesterday for imbibing in the wrong place.
While your editor couldn't care less for Dolores Park as of late -- compared to the Wal-Mart-ish size and scope of DP, we prefer boutique parks like the bludgeoningly charming South Park, or that park on Folsom Street where men play basketball -- we know this affects many of you. That said, you can circumvent a pricey citation by putting your booze in awater bottle and/or ingesting your drug(s) of choice before setting up shop at the park. Ta-da.

Not a problem; just dress like the homeless and guaranteed they won't harass you.
+1
SFPD do this once every 6 months to scare people. It never works. People will be drinking at the park all weekend while Brock watches men play basketball on Folsom Street :)

no reasonable person could know this because it is never enforced. not just @ the dolo, but any park in the city, Golden Gate Park etc...
Not only is it not enforced in any park, it also doesn't seem to be enforced anywhere at all. I've walked right in front of cops while I was drinking beer on the sidewalk in the Mission a handful of times. There's no way they couldn't have seen me. They've never done anything.
They need to be suitably motivated to enforce them most of the time. Like at Bay to Breakers this year where I saw cops casually grab beers out of people's hands as they walked by. Surprisingly less dickish about it than they could have been actually.
Dolores Park will have jumped the shark when
1) You can't drink there
2) It becomes known as "The Dolo"
Oh god. If anyone called it that I'd give 'em a swift kick to the cock.
Look above you
I'm a GGP guy; maybe I'll start calling it Tha Geeg
@joel we just call it 'the park'
If Dolores is "the dolo" then Golden Gate Park would need to be "the Goga". Or "da Goga" if you are really, really white.
I still prefer Gigi.
Try prying the white wine from a hipsters grasp. It's difficult.
PROTEST!!!!! This town is all about protest. I won't stand for this shit. Not for one bloody second, I say!
This whole enforcing the law thing is getting out of hand. Next thing you know, police will be citing themselves for smoking in Golden Gate Park.
Still can't believe that smoking is illegal in City parks...
I never knew that, but I'm very glad if it really is illegal. While I don't drink either I largely don't have a problem if someone wants to drink in the park. Most of the time they're not really causing any problems for anyone in doing so. When you start puffing large clouds of, well, whatever it is you happen to be smoking it wafts around to everyone near you and marks you as an asshole who thinks its more important that you smoke (and probably just throw their butts on the ground) than being respectful to the people around you.
Even if it was simply a ban on glass in the park I could more or less understand that, but people seem to largely agree that they'd like to drink in the park. Why do we need to restrict this?
This does not make for an enjoyable Opera in the Park down the road ...
Issuing citations, doesn't that require getting out of their cars? I liked it better when they were a do nothing police force. Since they decided to start occasionally enforcing laws how about starting with the homeless drug addicts that piss all over town? Or maybe the bridge and tunnel crowd that likes to get drunk and fight?
FUSFPD
Once again, dear fellow citizenry, there is no money in handing out tickets to people with no proof of identification or permanent address. The only people who will be ticketed under the new regime are those who look like they might pony up the cash and can be tracked down.
I am going to be hopeful for a year then go on another rant about yet another useless Chief of Police and lay it all on useless douche bag Newsom's useless doorstep.
D'port 'em all
who cares, do it anyway. civil disobedience ftw
We really should change our public drinking laws. This is just stupidity. Let us drink! This is freedom here! Cite people for littering, not for drinking!
lol @ hipsters crying foul! Fucking twatwaddles, maybe if you could handle your liquor, people wouldn't call the cops to complain about, take your pick - the noise, litter, public urination/defecation, etc.
just another way the city is draining money from its citizens.
