Cyclist Hits M Ocean View

accident_bike_muni.jpg

A little after 10:30 a.m. today, a male cyclist "early to mid-twenties" collided with the M Ocean View at Arch and Randolph, temporarily disrupting service. According to SF Appeal, "the bicyclist was traveling southbound (downhill) on Arch Street and struck the right side of the train as it headed inbound (westbound) on Randolph Street through the intersection." No word yet who failed to observe the stop sign. The cyclist was whisked to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. We hope his recovery is a speedy one.

Gee, I wonder what happened.

The cyclist made a complete stop, looked both ways, then proceeded through the intersection only to have a train dart out in front of him at the last minute.

According to sfgate, the train was stopped in the intersection.

According to the Examiner, it was moving, and had almost made it through the intersection.

If the only thing that happens to you is you collide with an M train while riding your bike through Lakeview then you should thank your lucky stars.

I'm glad he's okay. ... I've ridden by that intersection many a time as it's near my home and I've seen trains stopped with their fronts slightly over the line (meaning, anyone riding a bike should be keen enough to turn and avoid it, while not getting caught in the tracks)

But there's also a chance he was just stupid and didn't pay attention to the stop signs, though.

I have a lot of trouble imagining how you could hit an immobile object without doing something stupid, regardless of where that object happened to be when it became immobile.

Maybe it was a fixie rider who thinks brakes are for pussies.

No sympathies from me...

This week I saw a cyclist run a red light. Pedestrian was crossing on a walk signal and saw that the cyclist wasn't going to stop so he stopped to allow the bike to pass. The bike then crossed 1-1/2 lanes of traffic to ram the pedestrian. In cyclist fashion, the cyclist just took off after loosing his balance and stopping.

Couple weeks ago while riding the F, I saw something a cyclist run a red light and hit a pedestrian. Pedestrian brushed it off and kept walking. Cyclist stopped after hitting the pedestrian and then chased the pedestrian about 100 ft and hit him in the back of the head with his bike.

Odd that as a fellow cyclist I honestly do not have much love for many cyclists, many just don't pay attention, run red lights/stop signs, or just plain rude..

Maybe it was this moronic dickbag getting his just desserts.

If he happened to be one of the many other assholes screaming through a stop sign and nearly knocking down pedestrians - because - you know - he's on a bike and thinks he has the right of way, well he just got a quick lesson on what "right of way" really means.

Unless I hear otherwise, this guy was probably in his 20's and a fucking moron. Enjoy your squishy, mushy brain brave-tard!

He's lucky he hit a MUNI train. If he had hit a car, the driver would have pulled out a gun and shot him. Happened to Tony Bologna. 95% of drivers are packing heat and primed to use it.

"95% of drivers are packing heat and primed to use it."

Where do you get 95% from? Your ass?

70% of all statistics are made up.

jjsm: how does a cyclist hit a pedestrian "in the back of the head with his bike"? Bikes are big and kind of awkward to swing like a weapon toward a target that's 5-6ft in the air... especially after having "chased the pedestrian about 100ft". If you said he chased him onto the sidewalk and rammed him, OK, maybe...

That said - and as a cyclist myself - I've seen plenty of obnoxious behavior by my fellow riders. Nevertheless I can't visualize how this could have happened. Is there more to this story?

After the cyclist hit the pedestrian on the street, the pedestrian continued to walk in the same direction. The bike continued to roll for maybe 5 to 10 ft past the point of impact. Bicyclist dismounts bike and places it to his side. Bicyclist then proceeds to run with the bike to his side - therefore chasing said pedestrian. About 3 ft from the pedestrian, cyclist picks up the bike so that it rolls only on its rear wheel. This would put the front wheel high enough for a cheap shot to the back of the pedestrians head.

So this brainiac was flying down a hill, didn't stop at the stop sign, and blasted his way into the side of a M line train. Sounds like natural selection to me

I bike to work several times a week myself, and I have not a shred of a doubt that it was the cyclist blowing through a stop sign. I see it everyday. I work on 16th Street in Potrero Hill, and one of my co-workers (on foot) was run over by a cyclist speeding through the old stop sign at De Haro - she was literally knocked to the ground - and the cyclist didn't even stop to see if she was ok. One day driving I almost hit another guy on a bike at the same intersection, when he blew threw the new red light there going west on the eastbound bike lane, coming at me out of nowhere as the light changed. I missed him by inches. Again, he didn't even bother to look back. It makes it hard to argue for the rights of cyclists to share the road if they refuse to follow the rules of the road at the same time.

I hate to add to the negative anecdotes re: cyclists (since I am one) but I had an experience recently at 17th/Harrison where two bike routes intersect. I came to the intersection where cars were waiting in all directions and slowed to a stop, trying to figure out who was next and just as a couple of cars started across the intersection, three bikes came flying through from *behind* me and across the intersection - two turning left, one going straight. It was crazy. I found myself wondering what the other cyclists thought of me sitting there patiently, waiting for my turn... This kind of thing makes the rest of us look bad, and (as you say) makes it hard to argue for the rights of cyclists.

Riding a fixie without brakes is the hip new thing for retards to do. It is kinda like a Swatch and some Guess Jeans. The problem is, there are few bike-messenger-douchebags who are relatively in control and can handle it, but the johnny-come-lately trend follower can't stop his/her fucking bike. Hope he doesn't die, but it is natural selection.

"Riding a fixie without brakes is the hip new thing for retards to do"

Why are we hating on this? We should be CELEBRATING this. Or would we prefer that retards do something like bring assault weapons to Presidential Town Halls?
