One of those (dangerous looking) Smart Cars parked perpendicularly, shot by Jim Herd of SFCitizen. Is it legal to park your fun-size car like that, Herd asks? Nope.

It's barely into the lane, heck that VW looking van is as wide as it's long.

We could make it legal (probably)

Also, I see that van in the neighborhood all the time. I want it!

I totally covet that van, too!

People with normal cars, that park parallel to the curb, often are more into the road than that... maybe they should be getting tickets!

Parking code is written so that one front tire and one back tire of the vehicle must be with 18 inches of the curb. When smart cars get ticketed for parking perpendicular instead of parallel the ticket is written for parking more than 18 inches from the curb.

Rumor has it, there are discussions happening to change the legal wording, to accommodate the smart car. I'm sure it'll be a long time before that actually happens though.

Can you elaborate on why you think it's "dangerous looking"?

The way people in this city park, that smartcar owner better get used to climbing into the vehicle through the back window. Car in front blocks passenger door, car in back blocks drivers side door.

Merriment and neighborly good cheer shall follow.

They should add a key fob button to put the car in neutral. Then you can always push it in or out of tight spaces.

Better yet, some sort of joystick (kidding) or basic "drive slowly directly forward 5 feet" kind of thing, with a panic stop button you could hit if cars come.

Hummm you guys are quick, lets see something that weights 4000 lbs hits something that weights 800 lbs , you betcha the smaller object will be smashed more, thats called Physics.
