Local Post Offices at Risk

Facing a nearly $7 billion potential loss this fiscal year, The United States Postal Service selected 677 branches nationwide for either closure or consolidation, including more than a couple dozen in the Bay Area. Threatened post offices in San Francisco are the Civic Center P.O. Box Unit, the Federal Building, and the McLaren branches. Thanks to electronic communication, mail volume decreased by 9.5 billion pieces last year and is expected to fall by 28 billion pieces this year.

I don't remember the last time I went to a post office.

If only they'd close my post office, 1500 Pine Street! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten mail for different street numbers, and sometimes completely different streets.
And no telling how much mail I've just never received...

The lines are frequently out the door at 1500 Pine Street.

Come to think of it, lines can get chronically long at any San Francisco post office I've visited (Chinatown, Embarcadero, SOMA). It's like the clerks decide to take their lunch break as soon as there is more than a few people waiting.
