You really can't do anything these days without someone slapping your picture up on the internet within 15 minutes, can you?

I used to live right by this liquor store when I lived in the 'Loin! That guy's name is name is "Joe", too!

Sweet old guy. Incredibly racist, but a sweet old guy.

YOU
I wanna take you to a gay bar!

This couple is awesome. Nicest folks ever. When I first moved to the city and lived with my friend on Sutter and Polk we'd take Ambien and wander the aisles of their store looking for Sparks and cigarettes. We used to call them our grandparents since we were in there so often. I miss them.

I guess I'm old school . . . uh, because I'm old. But I still kinda believe in model releases and permissions for grey areas where public participation isn't implicit it the event. You have to remember that some of us geezers grew up in an age where there was still a semblance of privacy. So I can sympathize with the idea of a person not wanting to have a photo take in situations where permission wasn't granted. I realize that goes against modern street photography mores. But if a person isn't putting themselves out there for public display (i.e. public figures) it does bug me a little that those limits aren't respected. It's not that tough to ask. Oh, plus -- the photo will suck out a person's soul, don't you know?

Seriously. Someone clearly doesn't want you to take a picture of them while they're inside their place of business and not only do you do it, anyway, but then you post it up for the whole world to see? Not cool.

To me, unobtrusive photography of people out on the street is kind of a gray area, but when someone has indicated that they don't want you to take their picture, the ethics of the situation are pretty black and white.

whoa, whoa, whoa...

this image had nothing to do with street/candid photography. it was because i had inadvertently walked into their store with a lit cigarette. (i think she is allergic to smoke).

they were telling me to get out of the store (b/c of the cigarette). so, i went outside, stomped on my cig, and went back in and grabbed a can of Squirt. when i got to the counter i showed them the picture, and they seemed neither angry or amused. more, they wanted me to pay so they could ring up the next customer.

just to be clear, if someone doesnt want me to take their picture and are civil with their request -- i will almost always respect that and would never let it leak to the internet. (if i see Barack Obama riding an elephant down Geary, and he says dont publish -- well im publishing that anyways, but you get my point).

hint: if you click the link below the picture, it goes to the original Flickr page. look on the right for the set named "Portraits". youll soon see that my portrait are not stolen, but either captured while the subject isnt looking, or posed.

hope that clears up any misunderstanding here, guys.
