Even with Newsom lapcat Bevan Duffy supporting part of Chris Daly's Renter Relief Package, the mayor still vetoed what might have provided a modicum of financial relief for SF renters. (As opposed to, say, homeowners who have seen some help from the government during the recession.) Ted Gullicksen of the San Francisco Tenant’s Union had this to say about Newsom's veto.
He’s more concerned about getting contributions from the real estate industry for his run for governor than he is about the people of San Francisco being hit by recession ... He has vetoed almost every piece of pro-tenant legislation as a mayor, and opposed every piece when he was a supervisor.
That sounds about right Or whatever.
In other news. Rosie O'Donnell, a New York / Florida lesbian, and Metallica's Lars Ulrich, noted hater or technology and the future, donated loads of money to Newsom's gubernatorial campaign.

Newsom is a landlord. How is this a surprise?
Once I heard Gaffin explain how these measures would raise rents in the long run, and it totally made sense the way he explained it. But I don't remember what he said.
People who understand this stuff -- is it possible that what he was saying is true?
The idea is that lowering potential rental income and elevating the risk associated with rental units will discourage developers from building new rental units or property owners from converting for sale to rental units.
Fewer rental units on the market over time = more competition among potential renters = higher rent in existing units.
Exactly. Price controls cause shortages. It's not rocket science; it's covered in every Microeconomics 101 course in every university in the country. Just google "price controls" and shortages.
Give me a break. The supes knew this had no possibility of passing, yet they signed on to it for the press.
SF political theatre.
Next up from Chris Daly, Mission parental rent burden relief act.
Landlords are going to be required to provide living expenses to hipsters living in the mission so they can be more "real" and so their parents can finally stop paying their rent and expenses.
Exactly. These never had a chance to pass.
Good thing, too, or NOBODY other than singles and childless couples with six figure incomes would ever rent an apartment in SF again, except from ShittiApartments who can afford not to care.
Would YOU rent out a place where you could be forced to CUT the rent because your tenant happened to lose a job or decided to work part time and join a band? No freaking way.
This was obvious veto bait designed to make Randy Shaw and Ted Gullicksen all warm and squishy inside, not to solve any real problem.
If the supervisors want to give renters a break, they should cut their city taxes. They could cut their real estate taxes in HALF! (At no charge to the city.)
Like I stated infront of the Mayors office
"Do we need to make a contribution to his Goventorial campaign in order for him to see us?"
Latley, he seems to only meet with people/organizations that have a large $$$$$ investment for Condo-developers and his campaign.
As a renter in San Francisco, I have always felt I was more than adequately protected by rent laws. These extra additions to rental rights seem a bit too much. You lose your job, you have to find a cheaper place to live. Just like people who owned homes lost their jobs and often times lost their homes.
I still think the more and more rules and laws you have to protect "everyone" the more San Francisco becomes a city for ONLY rich and poor people. If you are average, nobody cares about you, and none of the laws protect you, but you are still expected to deal with a complicated system that creates prices that only rich people can afford to ignore.
show me one homeowner that's getting a break from their bank or government in this town?
things are shitty all over.
suck it up!
This bill was effing retarded, the laws already on the books makes it downright impossible to be a landlord in this city.
Far be it for me to give Newsom credit for ANYTHING, but he was right this time.
I agree with Bushy Hyde .... and it seems that we're becoming very good and penalizing minority groups (smokers, landlords, bus riders, entrepreneurs) for our own selfish purposes rather than figuring out solutions that do not create one set of winners at the expense of that minority group losing. Stop the divisive bullshit.
Providing subsidized housing, financed by taxation, is the role of government. Forcing a small minority of private individuals to do so is unconstitutional.
"...nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." (5th amendment US Constitution)
Can I go out on a limb here and state for the record FUCK GAVIN NEWSOM.
Useless, worthless, whoring, doped up, drunk scumbag with zero moral compass.
Thanks Brock; I feel so much better now.
*phew*
Time to water my geraniums, herb garden and tulips.
Hurray, looks like Gavin at least took Econ in college.
