As some of you know, Marc Leno's pushing a bill that wouldn't change any same-sex marriage laws, just clarify existing ones. See, Leno wants the state of California to recognize gay marriages taking place in other states. It didn't sound too controversial when we first heard about it, but sure enough, some people, like whimsical hate-group the California Catholic Daily, found a reason to object.
As expected, their reasoning is flimsy and ignores the Supreme Court's affirmation of existing marriages. (Remember, this group, like the former Miss California, isn't just opposed to gay marriage, they're opposed to gay PEOPLE. And, bottom line, they'll take any opportunity to try hurting people who happen to be queer.)
In related news, a slew of pro-Prop 8 people just moved to Maine and they're trying to the same thing that they did in California. The group that wants to force "Maine's new gay marriage law with a referendum vote says it has gathered enough signatures to put it on the ballot in November." This is scary. Obviously, people who force their beliefs based discrimination into state law need to be stopped. One way you can do this is by donating to this fund that will help save marriage in the state of Maine. Anything little amount, big or small, will do!
As always, check out Stop8.org for comprehensive information on same-sex marriage.

Week Around the Ists

I don't care how many Prop 8 people move to Maine - all they are going to do is get their sorry asses harassed and kicked around by the local politicians, cops and real Maine folk. That part of the world isn't as pliable or easily swayed as California. And they do not take kindly to outsiders telling them what to think or do.
I would go out on a limb and say that the majority of Maine folks don't give a damn about your personal sexual proclivities, they just want to be left alone. Oh yeah, and being so close to the birthplace of basic American freedoms, they don't like the government putting its paws on personal/private business.
Prop 8 people will lose magnificently.
It might not be phrased the way you would like to hear it (they're raw Maine people), but I think that like MA and VT, Maine will kick their sorry asses to the curb.
CT, RI and the rest shall follow suit shortly.
Bet on it.
The reporting on this is terrible, and it is the fault of the law's supporters. Leno's bill would notrecognize out of state marroages, it would DENY recognition of such marriages by fircing them to be considered as Domestic Partnerships under California law. While this is certainly a step up from current law, liberal groups should not try to describe this as in any way shape or form as recognizing marriage.
In an asperger syndrome-y way, you might have a point.
Thank you for calling these groups what they are : Hate Groups.
Religiosity fits more than one definition of psychosis.
Yes, hate groups indeed .... and we're subsidizing them with tax exempt status. Close that loophole!
I'm just perturbed that people from out of state are allowed to donate funds to state proposition battles. All those donors in Utah should not have been allowed to give money to support the H8. And even though money came from elsewhere in the US to support the anti-H8, it still makes no sense why someone in Utah or any other state should be trying to fight a battle that has no ramifications for them, and as such, is purely just an ideological battle. We don't let foreign countries give money to presidential candidates, so why would we let other states try and screw with other states.
