Karl Malden, Dead at 97

"A Streetcar Named Desire," "Streets of San Francisco," "On the Waterfront"

Karl Malden, star of stage, screen and TV commercials, died yesterday. He was 97.

Born Mladen George Sekulovich; March 22, 1912 - July 1, 2009, this crusty-but-benign thespian could play second fiddle like no one could in such films as A Streetcar Named Desire (Oscar, Tony), On the Waterfront, How the West Was Won and Patton. But for most of us, he will be best remembered on television as Lt. Mike Stone on the '70s classic The Streets of San Francisco

Malden also served as a spokesman for American Express, reminding members "Don't leave home without it," which helped plunge countless people into irrevocable financial debt.

Reportedly in bad health for over the last few years, Malden died at his Brentwood home in Los Angeles.

"That's not the point!"

"I talked to my mother about you and she said, "How old is Blanche?"

"Don't leave home without it!"

Lt. Stone was the best detective SFPD never had. Too bad, because when he got involved, suspects were actually located and arrested.

Anyway, sad news but hardly a surprise. 97 is a good old age.

Loved old schnozzle nose. On the Waterfront? Brilliant.

Finally! A little love for my old partner, Detective Stone.

Indeed, you were the best cop our City has ever seen. The streets of San Francisco aren't the same without you. Rest in peace.

Greatest SF cop show ever and one of the main reasons I fell in love with then and moved to SF. 97 is a good old age. Hope he enjoyed the ride.

And yes, I have Streets of SF on DVD.

RIP Detective Stone.
