Power Outage Hits SOMA / LORI (Update)

power outage.jpg

A power outage brought the world as we know it to a halt today in the SOMA / LORI neighborhood, most egregiously affecting SFIst HQ. (Damn you to hell again, PG&E.) From what we can tell, power along Third Street from Townsend up to Harrison is sans electricity as of 1:15 p.m.. For those of you who need electricity and a wireless connection in the hood, we recommend going to Epicenter Cafe at 764 Harrison, between Third and Fourth streets. They have wifi, power, passersby AND great coffee. UPDATE: Power had been restored. Please leaved 21 Amendment and South Park, and return to your offices at once.

It's a cute name new for the vibrant, up-and-coming "Lower Outer Rincon Hill" neighborhood. It's a fresh and hip term, so please use it liberally.

also recommending Epicenter Cafe. the folks that work there are really nice and have always recognized me when I come in.

It's dumb, sorry. Maybe I'm just cranky and old-school, and harken back to the days when we didn't need to amalgamate (Misstro, Chinancial District) or acronym-ize (NOPA, LORI) every block.

And yes, I fully acknowledge the irony that is my screenname.

But "Tendernob" is funny and clever because it's a double-entendre.

Acronymizations are just NYC wannabe-ism promoted in no small part by ethnophobic realtors.

Soho is a london thing.

But you are absolutely right about the creation of new names for neighborhoods to differentiate it from where the poor/brown/undesirables live.

Once again, some serious questions need to be posed to PG&E. When you give a company a monopoly is it not too much to ask for reliable service?

When you give a company a monopoly, you're guaranteed NOT to have reliable service.

Of course, the alternatives to a monopoly are:
* Government monopoly. Possibly cheaper, but strange things happen when the government runs out of cash.
* Power deregulation. And we all know how well that worked out.

The power came back on about 30 minutes later, just as all my coworkers were considering going home for the day. There was a collective groan, in our office, when the power came back =(

Bluxome was spared which is unusual.

LORI? Srsly. WTF? I refuse to play along.

The good people of the LORI refuse to be lumped in with the undesirables of SOMA. Seedy creatures, they are.

And all along I was calling it TIW - Treasure Island West. haha...bunch of dorkasauruses...

LORI is stupid. Brock, go back home to LA or wherever you come from. You make SF sound stupid.

LORI? Seriously? LORI?

Jeebus H. Mother of god(s), has it really come to this?

Please stab me in the ear before I have to hear another of these neighborhood rebrandings.

Can we stop with these stupid fuckin neighborhood names? Sadly enough, I doubt many people on these site remember what SF was like in the 80's where names like The Sunset, The Haight, Hunters Point, The Mission, The Tenderloin, West Portal, The Richmond District, Civic Center and North Beach were IT, and nothing else. No upper lower inner outer south-of north-of east-of west-of of any goddamn thing.

Well, "South of the Slot" has been around quite a while.

I think we've hit a nerve here. Let's lay off on the douchebaggery of acting like a bunch of real estate agents (read: bored, angry, dopey white women with no real skill set) and just leave things as they were.

The moment you start segmenting North Beach into Upper Telegraph, East of Fisherman's Wharf, South of the Fucking Park or West Side of the Goddamn Hill Facing East I am going to plant my size 12 in someone's ass.
