Greening San Francisco, an Impressive Student Wiki

greeningsf.jpg A class of 17 juniors and seniors at the Urban School of San Francisco have brought environmental education into the 21st Century with their comprehensive eco-wiki, Greening San Francisco. Currently the site covers six main topics: Environmental justice, Waste reduction, Climate change, Reducing toxins, Alternative fuels, and Water use.

Each topic is then broken into five sub-categories: Background information, Steps San Francisco is taking to address issues and concerns, What else could/should SF be doing, an Interview with a key person in the field, and the Students' evaluation of the effectiveness of the city's efforts on the issue. Each topic section also has a forum for users to discuss the issue.

In terms of the students' evaluations, many of the topics start off with San Francisco being one of the leaders in the country in that area, but efforts are being impeded by the various bureaucracies of city government. The one area in which San Francisco received a very high score was in Waste reduction. The city's landfill waste has been reduced by an impressive 72%, and they believe that the city's more aggressive efforts have proven most successful, such as the recent bans on plastic bags and styrofoam, the encouraged use of reusable bags, and the strict policies for construction and demolition companies. They do think the city still needs to step up its efforts in making recycling of styrofoam, motor oil, electronics, and chemicals more easily accessible to residents, instead of relying on us to take the intitiative.

Does it mention what complete utter bullshit the LEED certification is for new construction when that new construction gains certification by taking away the "green" eco-friendly traits of an existing building next door?

I believe points are earned by new construction for private open space and sunlight, yep, that's some of the bullshit.

The city could be a lot greener if Gavin & the Supes (which would be a great name for a band) put their feet down and forced landlords to put compost bins in their apartments. I don't think there's a single green bin on my block.

It looks like the Supes have very recently gotten that ball rolling, much to SF landlords' protest.

I can't wait until my building implements the composting.
