2010 Watch: Legalizing Pot

brownies1.jpg

Can you feel it? It runs thick in the air. The 2010 election is coming. And with that comes the deluded hopes and dreams of many a wonk who think that this next election will solve all of their problems. (See: Obama) But here's something most all of us can look forward to: the legalization of marijuana. According to NBC Bay Area, "State Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, introduced a resolution Monday urging the federal government to end medical marijuana raids in California." The measure, if passed, would also "let people 21 and older possess an ounce and grow plants as long as the 'garden' is no bigger than 5 by 5 feet." Counties would then be able to tax and regulate it. This comes on the heels of Assemblyman Tom Ammiano's bill to further legalize mary jane. Ammiano's office tells SFist that they hope to have the bill heard either later in the fall or at the beginning of next year.

i'd toss my cigs in a fast minute *if* this actually passes. and then fill my cupboards with Gatorade and that wonderful walnut covered toffee they sell at Trader Joe's.

weed won't help you quit cigs

"56 percent of California voters supported legalizing marijuana" is promising, but seeing as how we can't even legalize gay marriage, I'm highly skeptical. How vocal are the opponents?

I will vote for and 100% support any legislator who supports this legislation.

It is long overdue and will greatly improve the safety of our children and end the ongoing cartel murders.

YES on legalizing the production and sale of marijuana to adults!

Cartel Murders? Nobody is getting shot arguing over some cheap bud grown in some Oakland backyard.

A few hikers get shot every year when they stumble upon Mexican grows in state and national parks. Just another reason to legalize this shit already.

As long as there are Federal laws against marijuana, Leno's actions just are just grandstanding. Note his state measure just asks the Feds not to enforce the existing laws.

If he believes marijuana should be legal, why doesn't he call on the Bay Area's Federal legislators to introduce a repeal? Who would that be? Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer. The Speaker of the House and two senior senators of the majority party.

If they supported changing the laws it would mean something. But they don't. Ask them. None of them support changing the laws. Neither does Barack Obama.
