Breaking: New Hampshire Approves Gay Marriage

new-hampshire.jpg

"New Hampshire legislators," according to AP, "have approved a measure that would make the state the sixth to allow gay marriage." And Gov. John Lynch will, most likely, sign the legislation sometime this afternoon. The Senate passed the civil rights triumph on Wednesday, with the House approving it later in the day. (The House vote, by the way, was 198-176.) New Hampshire joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, and Iowa as the only U.S. state that legally recognize and allow gay marriage. Kudos to you, NH. (An aside: Maine? Vermont? Connectichusetts? Technically, these aren't even real states, California State Supreme Court. So, you know, something to think about.)

I'm super excited about NY and NJ (hopefully) being next. They're like, actually populated and stuff.

Six options for my travel dollars ... keep 'em coming.

These states are kicking our ass and yet we still can't help but condescend.

Live free or die, baby!

Plus a small sideways step by my backwards birthplace, RI.

This is not by accident (well, maybe Iowa sorta is) - but this is part of a strategy by the GLBT community in the Northeast - who not being prone to pratfalls like California - decided to focus on creating a marriage equality zone in New England - a relatively culturally cohesive, geographically contingous area with a history of progressivism and a general "live and let live" attitude. Big props go to GLAD (Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders), New England's GLBT legal organization for their part in the New England strategy.

The idea was that a marriage-equality zone of the entire New England region - besides providing a real civil rights victory - would be a tremendous advocacy tool - hey look, there are six states (when Rhode Island comes along) with gay marriage and they haven't fallen into the ocean.

And look, they even have functioning state budgets and aren't a big turd of foreclosures! (sorry, that last one was me)

I'm flailing around a bit, factually, on this, but isn't it true that those states also have far superior Constitutions than ours? No props, etc. Help me out here.

It is, as they say, about time!

Smart states know you don't put civil rights to a vote of the ignorant unwashed masses.

Yes, that seems to be the common thread. The legislature is making the changes not the whole population of the state (or the less than 40% who vote).

"Aren't even real states..."

Be nice, Brock. NH-VT-ME-CT-MA were states when CA was still Mexico.

On top of that, they've been so nice over the years. Remember when they invited CA to the bicentennial party in 1976 even though it was only ~125 years old? Really thoughtful. What did CA bring as hostess gifts? Ronald Reagan and the Eagles. Sheesh.

These states were US states when CA was still part of the Spanish empire. Mexican independence was in 1810.

Oh, please. Don't forget Nixon.

Please. Anyone in a state that would pass Prop 8 does not have the right to insult New England.
