30 Hurt In 71 Haight-Noriega Crash

muni 71 accident.jpg

A little after 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, the 71 Haight-Noriega (of course, it had to be the notoriously dodgy 71), crashed into a moving car at Market and Jones streets. Both vehicles were traveling east on Market before they smashed into each other. According to Muni spokeswoman Kristen Holland, "[p]reliminary reports indicate seven people were taken to the hospital and 23 others were treated at the scene for injuries sustained in the crash." None of the injuries were life-threatening. Why did the two hunks of steel ram into each other? Who's to say. This is Muni, a mystery wrapped questions rolled into a transfer. But the Muni driver in yesterday's crash has been placed on "non-driving status" until his pee tests positive or negative for substance abuse.

I'm glad I went home at a normal time yesterday.

This just proves that the 6 is safer as well as less smelly than the 71.

Learn to drive or get off the road. If you want to drive like shit, ride a bike.

I see more lawsuits. I wonder how many of those 30 people that didn't go to the hospital saw $$ in their eyes as it was happening.

When those N Judahs (or whatever) smacked into each other near Caltrain a while back, the video footage showed what appeared to be people running onto the train and staging themselves just so after the accident. I wonder if anything like that happened here.

So what's the ultimate fate of the driver? Cushy non-driving job? Large cash buy-out? Returned to service with no further comment? At this point I can't even tell if it's strong-arming from the union or just Muni being incompetent in every possible way.

That's not entirely fair though, it could have legitimately been the fault of the car, but these things happen just a little bit too often to never see any results.
