What are notables saying about the California State Supreme Court upholding prop. 8? Let's find out.

Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D, San Francisco):

Today's Supreme Court opinion upholding Prop. 8 is a stark reminder that the struggle for equality and justice must and will go on. We have come a long way since the days when Harvey Milk and I fought against the discrimination of the Briggs Initiative and Proposition 8 was no different. Harvey's message then was one of hope and we can see how that message is making progress throughout the country - five states now embrace marriage equality and several more are on the verge.

Scott Trotter, spokesperson for the the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

Today’s decision by the California Supreme Court is welcome. Also, purple ponies, unicorns, magic sprinkles, rubies, diamonds, do re mi, help I'm being oppressed, pretty teeth, shiny lollipops, fairy stardust...

President Barack Obama, via White House spokesman Robert Gibbs:

I have not talked to the President about it. I think that the issues involved are ones — you know where the President stands.

Gavin Newsom:

Today we must turn anger into action.

It’s cold comfort to many that history is moving in the right direction, with five states already on their way to marriage equality. But it’s our job to make sure history moves faster towards equality here in California.

We must redouble our efforts in California to finally win this fight for equal rights. Please, take a moment today and lend your voice to this just cause.

Sign our petition for marriage equality.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger:

While I believe that one day either the people or courts will recognize gay marriage, as governor of California I will uphold the decision of the California Supreme Court. Regarding the 18,000 marriages that took place prior to Proposition 8’s passage, the court made the right decision in keeping them intact.

SFist commenter Spike Pecan:

What if... they THREW YOU INTO A PRISON CAMP? What if... they KICKED YOUR ELDERLY MOTHER IN THE FACE?What if... they POISONED YOUR ALSATIAN PUPPY? GAY MARRIAGE...It's exactly the same thing.

Former SFist editor, current SF Appeal editor Eve Batey:

Back when I was at the Chronicle, those of us who worked in the newsroom weren't supposed to have public opinions on this issue because we were supposed to be journalistically objective. Fuck that. This is a civil rights issue, and anyone who can be "objective" about it can kiss my ass. I hope that one day, the people responsible for this mess -- the prop's proponents, the voters who supported it, and everyone too lazy to fight against it, looks back at this time in our history and cringes at what assholes they were.

Former Miss Trannyshack and 'Charlie House' host Anna Conda:

FUCK YOU!!! Fuckin Bigotry wins. Burn shit down!

one of our waiters in Paris said he'd been "in the closet" for 32 years.

fucking tragic stuff. i can view YouTube vidz on my Blackberry, but folks cant legally marry?

does not compute in 2009.

i engaged in a hetero marriage three times last year with no problem.

why are not my gay friends not able to share the same confusion/bliss/expense >> love ??!??!??

My Anna Conda don't want none unless you got some, Hon.

Yeah, I know where the President stands: against gay marriage, as he said repeatedly throughout his campaign. I wonder where he would have stood when Loving v. Virginia was being decided.

His cowardliness, disguised as "consensus-building" sickens me.

But Obama is a Fierce Advocate for gay rights. He said so himself.

Bullshit. President Obama has repeatedly said he supports "civil unions" for gay people. And though he claims to believe gays should not be allowed to marry on religious grounds (as a lawyer he knows it wouldn't fly legally) the United Church of Christ to which he belonged opposed "separate but equal" rights for gay people and officially supports equal marriage rights as did his own priest, reverend Wright.

While running for president, then senator Obama, also supported repealing "don't ask, don't tell" but now that he is president he isn't doing shit about it. As a politician, he's probably learned he can say whatever he wants to gay audiences without following through because we lie down and play dead every time a politician does this too us. Over, and over, and over...

Fuck Obama.

There are going to be consequences for this ruling; stay tuned........

Yeah, next election cycle. Until then, back where we started from.

On the one hand, my previous post was changed and taken out of context. On the other hand, I'm now considered "notable," which should piss off many other SFist commenters.

Whether it's legal or not, practicing homosexual men (even once since 1977) and women who have sex with a homosexual man (within 1 year) will not be able to donate blood. The American Red Cross will not take it. Too much risk of blood contaminates and STDs.

Note this rule only applies to homosexual men and not women (unless they had sexual intercourse with a homosexual man. Nature unfortunately DOES discriminate.
