This is nice to see. When the cops started rounding up the traffic-blockers, they got booed, which was ridiculous. It's important to remember that the SFPD feels the same way about equality as the rest of the city.

Okay, we may have shittier civil rights laws than Iowa or Massachusetts.

But really, we do have nice cops here.

I don't know how the SFPD could possibly be any nicer. Thirty years ago the cops went on a rampage through the Castro and beat random passers-by after the White Night riots -- the difference between then and now could not be more stark.

Of course if they wanted to arrest some murderers now and then, that would be OK too.

I agree. I'm not really a fan of their crime fighting skills (or lack thereof), but I am impressed by the way they handle themselves at the various protests I've attended. Certainly not what I'm used to, being from flyover country where cops would love to crack the skulls of peace/gay loving SFers.

i will never forget my first pride parade twelve years ago. a float went by that was simply themed, "smoke pot." it was a flatbed with some random green shit taped to it, and five dudes throwing joints. i reached out to grab a lofted j-bone and it caught a breeze, landed short, and rolled up to the shoe of a cop in front of me. he leaned over, picked up the joint, and handed it to me. i decided that day to move here.

so, that is my good s.f. cop story.

Did you know that Fred spent much of his life honoring a profession that has gone largely unsung around here?

Some of them are here tonight. The profession is law enforcement.

I know Fred feels that too often our feelings are locked in...and we feel restrained, and perhaps even embarrassed...to reach out and touch an officer of the law.

After all, they are people, aren't they?

Stand up. Pat them on the back. Reach out.

Shake hands with any one of these men in blue.

Hug a cop! Yeah, go ahead. I said it.

Yeah! That's a wonderful feeling!

Roomer has it that the protesters who were arrested actually signed paper work prior to sitting down saying that they would not sware, spit or do anything negative against the police. The police and protesters even negotiated where they would sit down...original plan was MARKET and VAN NESS.
Also, local press said the PD deployed gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender officers as 'moderators' so to speak between the groups.
