Carnaval and Other Weekend Events
There's lots to do on this foggy three-day weekend coming up!
ALL WEEKEND
We have the annual Carnaval shaking up the Mission District on Saturday and Sunday. The Festival runs both days on Harrison St between 16th & 22nd St from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. The Parade is on Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m. at 24th & Harrison, going west along 24th St, then turning up Mission all the way to 17th St. Check out the Entertainment Line-up for both days.
Soupstock: Food Not Bombs Convergence is a concert and conference celebrating 29 years of Food Not Bombs, providing a forum for planning future actions amid economic crisis. On Saturday, there will be a Conference from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the 5lower Shop (992 Peralta Ave), which will include speakers, workshops, panel discussions, and a film screening on how “we can do more together than any of us can do on our own.” The Concert is on Sunday at McLaren Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The David Brower Center presents the first annual Mountainfilm Berkeley, which will coincide with the larger, 31st annual Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, Colorado. Mountainfilm Berkeley will screen leading independent documentary films from around the world. Check the David Brower website for screenings and showtimes.
SATURDAY
At this year's Bay Area Classic Yo-Yo Championship, the routines are set to music, and the competitors pick the songs. Takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Golden Gate Park Band Shell (50 Tea Garden Dr).
For the past five months, seven young designers came together for T-Shirt Has a Voice, a USF Upward Bound class project, and learned the history of the t-shirt, concept development, software design tools, presentation skills, and marketing strategies. The students will be presenting and selling their work from 11 a.m. to Noon at TRUE (1415 Haight St) and from Noon to 1 p.m. at FTC (1632 Haight St). The youth collaborated with both stores to bring their designs to the masses.
As part of the free ongoing Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, jazz vocalist Kat Parra explores the The Sephardic Music Experience, "inviting the listener on a journey, traveling from the Iberian Peninsula, with all of its Moorish influences, across the ocean into Latin America." arra will be joined by musical director and pianist Murray Low, Masaru Koga (woodwinds), Stephanie Antoine (violin), Peter Barshay (acoustic bass), Katja Cooper (drums) and Paul van Wageningen (drums). From 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
At Warning Toxic! Exhibit Opening and Campfire from 2 to 6 p.m. at Crissy Field Center, the interns of the Inspiring Young Emerging Leaders (I-YEL) program will raise public awareness about toxic sites and how they impact our society, environment, and economy. Activities will include knowledgeable speakers; a science experiment; youth-made documentary; super comic; campfire, free food, and other cool stuff.
